Hi Alex
I'm gonna presume your external drive has a USB connection rather than an eSATA one.
Not really sure why it's not showing up but just checking you've tried connecting to different USB ports on your PC and the USB plug isn't being restricted by anything else connected either side of it?
You could also try a different USB cable if you have a spare one handy.

Good luck.

Yep it's a USB one and i've tried switching ports and unfortunately i haven't a spare usb cable, but I am doubtful it is that as it works fine on my XP laptop, thanks :)

I've just had a look on 'uninstall programs' and can't find 'hard drive controller drivers' i gather they'll be called something else? :?

You'll find the option for uninstalling drive controller drivers under "IDE/ATA/ATAPI" in the "Device Manager" but I don't think your drive will show up there as it's USB.
You could look under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" to see if the drive shows up there - it may show as something like "USB Mass Storage Device"

Hmmmmm! Ok then, from the start menu, right click on Computer and select Manage.
On the left-hand side of the window that appears you should see Disk Management - click on that and see if your external drive is showing up there.
