External HDD - NEED HELP

I borrowed an iomega external hard drive a couple of months ago to store loads of massive video files from a wedding I shot and am trying to edit. For some reason my computer (A Dell Inspiron 545 w/ Windows Vista Home) won't allow me to look into the HDD when it is connected. Under device manager, it has recognised that a device has been attached but won't let me access any of it.

I tried booting in Ubutntu via a memory stick but just my luck, my PC won't let me do that either. Anyone had any similar problems with iomega HDDs? Would it be worth investing in my own? If so, anybody know of any HDD that definately work with the computer specs described above?

I've tried assigning it another drive letter, but it just gives me a message saying it can't be done. All usb ports have the same effect.

All USB drivers? Wouldn't I lose the ability to use everything else I use through USB cables?

Uh oh...

Mine was an Iomega with the above drive type inside.

Unscrew it and take a look.

I flashed mine with the newest hard drive the day after I bought it so I wouldn't be affected.

Hmm.... I'm hesitant to flash it as it isn't actually mine, but this could be the cause of the problem. I'm wanting to edit a lot of stuff anyway, so I guess I'd probably be better off buying my own HDD.

PC will reinstall all the drivers on start-up

Hmm...That might be worth a try. Cheers.

How exactly do you go about uninstalling them?

Please don't ever try and edit from an external USB hard drive.

Go for a eSata drive instead

I have a lot to learn as it would seem. I will need a hard drive in order to store all scratch files on when editing. My PC HDD is not big enough. How does and eSata drive connect?

With an eSata adapter, newer computers have them. Although I believe if your motherboard supports Sata it should be fairly easy to run a Sata to eSata cable to the back to hook up a drive.

For example:
http://www.satacables.com/assets/images/IMG_018833.jpg

It is like an extension cable, male to female, Sata is male and eSata is female.

If your motherboard doesn't support Sata then I guess it would be time to upgrade.

Another option; Installing a PCIe USB 3 card and purchasing a USB3 external Hard Drive. Although this would be a bit more expensive, USB3 is sort of.. What is coming in the future, I am not saying it is future-proof, just pointing out is a bit newer than eSata.

With every comment, this is becoming more and more expensive to fix... I'd have to buy the eSata HDD and the adaptor. I'm only a student. I can't really afford all of this :(. If you have all of it for free by any chance? Hahah

Hehe, you can get the eSata brackets for next to nothing. China is for sure future-proof lol

Then purchase an eSata enclosure:

Then whatever hard drive you can afford (Sata) - Try eBay

This is doing it on the cheap, you have to put the work in :p
