You want SATA II which is 3GB/s transfer and usually only available on PCI express slots, but yes that is the type of expansion card you need

this one perhaps?

It won't make any difference. PCI is limited to 133MB/s so the difference between SATA1 (150MB/s) and SATA II (300MB/s) is irrelevant.

So whats the limit on PCI Express? I think a more important consideration is whether the CPU, OS etc can actually cope with the throughput tbh.

PCI-E 1x 1.1 is 250MB/s, PCI-E 1x 2.0 is 500MB/s. Obviously this is for the entire card not individual ports.

The CPU transfers information in and out of memory at 10,000MB/s so I doubt the transfer between the hard drive and memory at 1% of this speed is hitting any system barriers.

PCI-E 3 is 8 GT/s
