Fantasy Football - shared advice and info

I guess many of us are currently entering our fantasy football teams, with varous newspapers and online web sites.

Thought it may be useful for people to use this entry for asking any questions about players, or to share any useful advice or knowledge about new players, injuries etc.

Obviously each paper or web site has different rules, and different prices for players, so the information can only be of a general nature.

I will start with a couple of things.

Note there is a funny start to the Premier league this year.

After the first matches on 16th/17th August there is then a midweek England match on the 20th August. There are then two weekends of football on the 23rd/24th August and 30th/31st August, then a break for 2 England matches (no Premier matches 6th/7th September).

So most teams play 3 Premier matches before the break for the England matches EXCEPT Man Utd and Fulham. Man U are due to play the UEFA Super Cup on 29th August so Man U v Fulham has been postponed from 30th August.

So everyone will play 3 matches up to 31st August EXCEPT Man U and Fulham who only play 2 which will obviously affect how many fantasy points players from those teams can score.

May be worth bearing in mind.

Player with injuries who MAY (or will) miss the start of the season.

Ronaldo - Man U - definately miss the start

Bosingwa - Chelsea - possibly miss start

Toure - Arsenal - has had maleria but may be fit for start (may be weak?)

Senderos - Arsenal - I think he may miss the start of season

Liverpool defenders Degen and Aurelio are currently both injured.

Rio Ferdinand of Man U has been injured

Bouma of Aston Villa will be out until Christmas (at least)

It's probably worth waiting a week before deciding your team as now the transfer merry go round has started to kick in a lot more players will be transferred over the next week

So you could see some foreign players join prem teams, they will be dirt cheap and some will turn out to be real bargains

Players who were injured last season who are now fit may be low priced and hence good value.

Gary Neville of Man U missed all last season but now seems to be fully fit. I assume he will get back his right back slot in place of Wes Brown.

Daniel Agger of Liverpool missed most of last season but now seems to be fully fit and should get his centre back place alongside Carragher.

Sagna at Arsenal missed a lot of the end of last season but he is now fully fit and has played all of Arsenals pre season friendlies.

I have my Fantasy teams with the Daily Telegraph and they allow you to make as many transfers as you like right up to Premier league kick off on 16th August.

I'll add the West Ham one's

Dean Ashton - Fully over his ankle injury, hopefully back to his best

Craig Bellamy - Missed most of last season, has now featured in every pre season game as well as playing for Wales at the end of last season, fully fit again available for only £1.5 Million!

Julian Faubert - Snapped his achilles in pre season last year, has had a slow rehabilitation but is now back and ready to go (still untested in the premier league though)

Kieron Dyer - Suffered a double leg break a few games in last season, has now fully recovered from that an the medics say that the time he has had out has done wonders for his previosu injury problems and he is expected to play most of next season

Scott Parker - Ha a few problems with his knee last season, he has had an operation since and there is no problems now

All 5 of those will be in the starting XI for West Ham next season

Other players ready to return

Lee Bowyer, Matthew Etherington, Callum Davenport, Danny Gabbidon, James Collins,

Thanks for info.

I have to say you were very unlucky with injuries last season. If you can get all those players back then I think you will be a good bet for a UEFA cup spot come the end of the season.

I was looking forward to seeing Faubert last season.

Being a Villa fan I will add some Villa info.

Villa had a very small squad last season and were very lucky we avoided a lot of injuries.

We had a good final league position of 6th with excellent performances from mainly Young, Agbonlahor, Laursen, Reo Coker and Mellberg.

We have of course just signed Friedal from Blackburn, but what sort of defence will he have in front of him?

We had no right back last season and Mellberg filled in. He has now gone to Juventus and we now have NO right back. With Bouma's injury last week we now have NO left back.

In fact our only defenders are Laursen, Davies, Knight (all centre backs) and Bouma (and Bouma is injured till new year).

There has been talk of Finnan of Liverpool and Shorey of Reading coming but as yet no sign, and we have a UEFA cup match in just over a week.

If I were you I would not pick a Villa defender in your fantasy team (unless we sign a few players quickly).

We are hoping for another good season from Young, and hopefully Agbonlahor will pick up after ending the season poorly. Carew will get a few goals but to be honest is not a prolific goal scorer.

Steve Sidwell has joined from Chelsea but I am not convinved he will be a big points scorer in fantasy football.

Gareth Barry is a good choice for a fantasy team as he scores and makes goals, and takes penalties, but who knows where he will be come the start of the season.

I will be surpirsed if we finish as high as 6th this coming season. I can see Portsmouth, Spurs and West Ham all getting above us this year.

Someone worked t out that on average we had 8 players unavailable for every game

For the Manchester United game in December at the end of that match we only had 13 fit players from the whole first and reserve team

I think we're going to be the most improved squad next season as;

Dyer, Faubert, Bellamy & Parker could all be considered new signings as can Collison, Sears and Tomkins who we had to pull from the academy to cover injuries but they more than proved their worth. We have also signed Behrami and will complete the signing of Lastuvka today so we are basically 9 first team players stronger than we was last season. Ashton also used last season to fully overcome his injury which is a massive bonus for us.

Another bonus is players like Carlton Cole and Matthew Etherington who wouldn't have got many games last season got to play regularly so the strength in the depth of our squad is much better.

We was unlucky but even with the injuries we still managed to finish tenth which was an improvement on the 15th placed finish the season before and but I think we will be much stronger for it next season

As for Faubert he is fast, I seem to remember him destroying your reserves last season even though we lost the match in the end, I think he will be very good next season

Senderos played for Arsenal yesterday (2nd August) so he may be fit again.

Unlikely to be a starting player, Gallas and Toure are the usual first choice players.

Kieron Dyer - After missing all but 193 minutes of last season and being fully ready to come back

He's decided to break his leg again, at least 4 months out with a stress fracture
