Faulty ACER laptop 18 months old.

I have been given a ACER laptop to fix, not a cheapy netbook, quite a nice dual processor one.

Issue is the charging circuit in the laptop is short circuit.

Motherboard requires replacing.

Acer don't want to know, PCWORLD won't touch it.
I know the sales of good act with pcworld should sort this out, but the shop won't listen... Any advice on how to sort this??? Head office?? Or should I just write it off and sell it as faulty on ebay for spares... It was nearly 700 quid about 17 months ago.

Its certainly unreasonable to have a machine die and be non repairable within that timeframe.

Sale of goods act and thread of small claims court to PC World should do the trick IMHO. But do so in writing.

Only 17 months old? I assume that the owner has not spilt any liquid over the keyboard, or done anything else to cause it to breakdown. If this is the case it obviously was not of "Merchantable Quality" when it was bought. If they have caused the problem themself get in touch with Acer and find out who they recommend locally to you. Acer don't want to know - was it you that spoke to them or the owner?

Are you trying to get PC World to sort this or is the original buyer?

The original buyer is not good at doing anything like that, she is a good friend. So I am trying to sort it our for her.

No re spillage, the power light on the PSU flashes green like pulses, even with battery removed. Googling the model and the fault points to other people in the same boat, (charging circuit on the motherboard) motherboards are around on ebay, and ebay has a few laptops with the same issue, (Fault with charging circuit).

I have spoken to acer who say it is not a common issue.. lol

If the sales contract is between the store & the customer she might have to do something. What about the soga template from the one show - she could fill in that & post or email it without any confrontation?

no chance unless you took out extended warranty.......have they not given you the option of having it fixed for a price?

you will be wasting ur time tbh, these companies know the process inside out and are used to people bringing it to their attention

you will be asked to get an independent engineers report and be asked to prove it is an inherrent fault from manufacture.........nigh on impossible to do and nil chance of getting anywhere with dsg

i would try acer again and ask what solution they can offer you in a polite manner but i doubt you will get anywhere.....this is why i always purchase sony for laptops etc.....purely for the service

Acer are useless even with a laptop within warranty so doubt you will get any joy with them. In my experience they will blame it on a software error (even when it is clearly not) and try and charge you £70 for the privIege. I would hassle PC World with SOGA etc.

Agreed.

It would be difficult for them to argue that the device only has a lifespan of 17 months and be a valid reason for not being able to get it repaired by any means by either the store or Acer.
