Date of Purchase?

How long is the warranty on it?

Have you put the screen back and opened up the above-keyboard-panel?

Do that, you should see where the lcd connects to the motherboard and if there is a problem

Have you tried an external monitor?

Without answers to this, virtually impossible to value.

Not sure on date of purchase but i know there isn't any warranty remaining.

It works sound on an external screen as that is what i have been using.

Not sure how to open up the keyboard thing! Might give it a go as it may be something easy to fix.

It should be pretty easy to softly lift the above-keyboard panel which probably covers the hinges, the below-keyboard is probably clipped in, the cable from the motherboard to the lcd display is impossible to miss.

Removed the keyboard but all the cables look fine to me, all connected and stuff. I am thinking it is maybe the light tube or something?

If the backlight is kaput then then screen is gone, laptop repair technies might want it to fix and resell, of course, you could order your own lcd and fix it yourself :)

When i first turn it on the dell logo comes on for a split second and then it goes off, you can faintly see it working but so dim you can't really make much out.

If the dell logo comes up as normal. normal brightness, backlights working fine, the problem might be with the graphics/motherboard.

Any suggestions :\

it could be the inverter, if the lcd is in tact but there is no backlight or the screen flickers. cheap fix as well...if its the inverted it will be about £25 for the part. i normally get them from ebay

good luck

It would be amazing if that was the fix. We took it to a computer shop and he told us it was the light. Obviously quoting £100+ to fix it but maybe he knew that it was that £30 piece.
