Faulty PS2 - attempting to fix../ find something to do with it

Recieved it today, as described... however as I have now bought a 360 arcade instead I don't have much use for it .. stilll me wants to keep as I'm sure I can entertain myself somehow..
Tim

I know how the white cog turning thing works, tried it but its no better than it was...

Managed to get NFS Underground 2 to kind of load... (skippy/long loading time)

Best thing I've done so far is try swabbing it with some clearasil (the lens)

Anybody got any other crazy ideas

Buy a working laser from RedIron

I've fixed many PS2's which have suffered disc reading errors, Theirs a little spiral rod that spins to move the laser forwards and backwards also the white thing that runs along it tend to build up with dirt etc.. Which sometimes causes the laser to stick sometimes resulting in a clicking noise.

I dismantle them and clean them up using a pointy instrument and baby wipe to get between the grooves, I've fixed many PS2's using this method.

If it's a Slimline PS2 it might be different so could be similar or different problem.

Do you have a laser then RedIron....

Was thinking of maybe just installing USBAdvance/Extreme and then using a USB hdd or someat...
#8
Replace the whole drive then fit an internal hard drive.

Forget any notion of playing games off an external USB drive unless you want to go bald (pulling hair out).
#9
anybody got a spare ps2 network adapter then?

Cool - how much for it? And will it work with my ps2

ah i've had big expeirance with these models and disc read errors. i was rather sneaky once. I got a Silver Phat PS2 that had disc read errors and didnt play the Up to Date Playstation 2 discs but remember the first Playstation 2 games to come out were Blue Layered discs and wernt on DVD Standard discs such as Ridge Racer 5, & Crazy Taxi, These games would work in the console so sneakily i took it to Game to trade it in and instead of them testing the console with their disc i already put a blue disc in for them to test and they accepeted it in. I couldnt beleive it! I felt quite bad after so I hope they found out it didnt work again before selling it to the customers, lol i sound like a right ****!

Whilst on this subject I've got an old PS2 that's suffering from drive problems. It's not related to the laser but the the rails and motor.

I need to find the right kind of lubrication for the laser rails and possibly replace the worm motor, it's very stiff and the little white hook that sits on it frequently skips making that horrible clicking noise.

I think that the best model was the SCPH-390003 as it had a very decent laser (and will read a copy of a very scrated GT3) it is whiny with CD games - but at least it plays them lol!

Yes it will work

For you it's free of course (just pay P&P) , I need to find it though which i'll do tomorrow, I know I have it though

And if anyone decides to report me again as this is the misc, it's a giveaway so this is allowed to be here!

WD40! Just don't get it on the laser, if you need a new motor I think I can help you there, you can have it for free though I would ask for P&P

LOL i remember pouring car oil down the thing :D

didnt go too well.

What I done was dismantled the white thing that touches the curved rod and put something (paper) between the white thing that hits the cogs and the motor (not the curved stuff). This holds the white thing more firmer so no more clicking noise, but likens snapping of the white thing. works well. but now i have a new issue - the laser :D

Which one.... I'd go out and get a memory card and then stick FreeMcBoot on it..

Tim

You probably cant sell that as modded then to be honest

Right so I took the PS2 apart again and blew off the cobwebs :). Cleaned all three rails removing all prior lubricant, adjusted the plastic hook that's attached to the bottom of the laser until I could move the motor without it skipping when horizontal, put it back together job done. Got COD1 up on screen now but I'm not liking how it looks on a widescreen LCD .

Time to re-mod it so that I don't have to put a PS1 game in the tray to boot homebrew then make final laser adjustments.
