Faulty Teknica TV/DVD Combu from TESCO

I am looking for a little help.

My father purchsed a 22" Teknica LCD/DVD combi 18 months ago from TESCO. The DVD has now stopped working so he phoned and they said this is a common fault, it will cost £49 to fix.
I said to him that if it is a common (inherent) fault it should be covered under the consumer act which states 6 years that a product should be 'fit for purpose' for.

TESCO are not budging as they say it is not a common fault, although they said they have had a lot back due to this issue.

What do you think my Fathers options are on this, or should he just pay the £49?

2yr eu warranty pdf here scroll to page 7 print it off and see store manager http://ec.europa.eu/publications/booklets/move/64/en.pdf

also they are saying it is not a common fault but quoted this to you "TESCO are not budging as they say it is not a common fault, although they said they have had a lot back due to this issue" which makes it a common fault

Personally I just forget about using Teknica stuff. I spoke to someone on the telephone at Tescos who said they end up with skip loads of returns of Teknica stuff each month. He advised me never to buy any again because it was *2!+&^$=£ (or words to that effect.
