Ok so today we finally gave in and bought a Wii for our sons birthday next week, poor kid is the only one in the universe not to own one (so he says).
Got quite a good deal I think and got the console Wii sports and 2 other games ( cant remeber which ) and my mum is buying him and extra remote and charging stand.
What I need to know now is what else do we need so he will be up and running on the his birthday i.e memory cards, can I just use a normal s.d card that goes in my digital camera or does it need to be a specific Wii one??
Is The sports accesory pack worth buying?
And what games would anyone recommend for a 10 year old.
Any advice greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

mario kart for sure!

as for the sports accessory pack its novelty only really doesnt affect the function at all just makes it look more like the item your using the wiimote as.

Memory cards not sure about but we have never needed one in either of our wii's it has some internal memory whioch is doing us just fine.

You will be needing an extra numchuck as well as remote

super mario galaxy is excellent too, my 10 year old nephew loves it. Mario Kart is also meant to be really good.
I wouldn't bother with the sports accessories pack, bit of a waste of money in my opinion.
I don't think you will need to buy memory cards or anything.

Not sure if wii fit will appeal to a ten year old.

Always check your games against this table: http://www.metacritic.com/games/wii/scores/

There are a vast amount of really really bad games for sale designed to cash in on the Wii's success - don't fall for it!

I have 3 remotes and nunchuks, 2 classic controllers and 4 Gamecube controllers. I highly recommend getting one of each and seeing what you like. Each game supports different controller options and sometimes an old-fashioned controller is best. The sports pack is a cheap cash-in and makes no difference to play whatsoever. An SD card isn't needed unless you fill up the Wii's internal memory which is unlikely unless you download a lot of virtual console games (these need a classic controller to play).

I agree super mario galaxy is ace for kids and adults too:-D. You can get the sports pack cheap on ebay but i personnally wouldn't buy it either. and you can do all your game saves on the wii itself.

its more aimed at fitness tho and the novelty would wear of quickly for a child

You can use a normal sd memory card although, The wii itself has a fair amount of memory for game saves etc so a memory card is not essential ( I have a memory card in mine but it's not yet used, all the game info has been stored on the Wii )
I would not recommend the sports pack ( Mine does not get used, it not necessary as Wii
sports is BRILLIANT as it is! )
You will need another nunchuck to play some two player games.
Wii sports is still very much played and by the children ( I have to admit to being beaten on bowling!! )and was the only game we had for a while so other games are a bonus.
Possible Games:-
Mario Kart Wii
Legend of Zelda
Mario Galaxy
Mario & Sonic @ The Olympics

i am awaiting delivery of my Wii, ordered Wii Play with it for the extra Wiimote.

Why do I need another nunchuck - what's it used for as opposed to the Wiimote?

Anyone know where I can get one for a good price?

they are used in conjunction with the mote on some games eg wii sports the boxing game you hold the mote in one hand nunchuck in the other and then swing them to move your fists on the screen, on other games the nunchuck is often used for moving with the direction joystick whereas the wiimote provides the mimiced movements like swinging a sword etc

the nunchucks are only bout £15 check out argos

If it's that cheap before release I'd suggest extreme caution. A discount down to £12.99 already suggests it's a very bad game. It may be worth waiting for reviews before ordering. Metacritic.com is the place to look as it averages loads and loads of reviews.

For some of the games you will be advised to attach the nunchuck into the wiimote. Obviously if you are on a 2 player game you will need to wii motes and 2 nunchucks.
Nunchucks are £13.50 online at Zavvi if you have a virgin credit card. Most places sell them for £15 although you may get it a couple of pounds cheaper from somewhere like deal extreme.

The nunchuk is £13.99 at Powerplay Direct

Yes metacritic is where I always check out games, I usually agree with the ratings that Edge magazine have given too, so I take a look at the review on metacritic by Edge to give me a good idea as to how good the game is.
It's tempting to buy games like the golden compass and the fantastic four but they have really bad reviews on metacritic so it just goes to show.

Can I just add that all the people that are saying that the SD card is used for Game saves etc are missing the point that the SD card can also import photo's that you have to the Wii console, and can play doodling on them, and use them for puzzles.

You can also play MP3 tracks via the SD card. My 10 year old son does both of these reguarly.

Yes I would definately pay the bit extra to get wii play with the xtra wiimote, good fun to play.

its just a load of different sports based games....much like the wii sports, thats why its cheap. R.R.P. is £17.99 and it was £9.99 but its gone up

HOW did you not see this before? its No.2 in HUKD best deals of all time!

I've yet to find a need for an extra Nunchuck. Also tell your mum to get the Wiimote with Wii Play, it's only £3 more, but comes with loads more fun games.

We only got 2 nunchucks but could with 2 more as is easier when we running on Mario VS Sonic Olympics.

Wouldn't bother with Wii Fit,although my children do use the game,I don't like the idea of dieting and losing weight being rammed down their throats and chars and graphs and what not,we skip that part with them.
Unless it was asked for I wouldn't bother, plenty ppl here have already suggested the games for children good to get for it.
