Btw if you ever find someones passport do not hand it into the police as they will destroy it and not even contact the owner! So if there are details of the owner on the contact page go down that route.

This is not always true.

I once found a £5 note on the floor, entered a charity prize draw, won but turns out as I was under 18 I couldn't go and my father went instead :(

Other than that, I lost a £20 note recently, if anyone finds it please return it to me, thanks.

I found a 'Lord of the rings' gold ring and sold it on eBay for £115. Nice!
I also spotted a tenner in the street once and before I got to it, another bloke picked it up. I walked over to him and said that I had just dropped it, he obviously felt guilty and gave it to me!! Try it... ha ha!

There are 43 police forces in england and wales, each of these has their own policies and procedures for dealing with lost and found property and how it is dealt with in order to try to reunite it with rightful owners.
Destroying the passport would never be done.
If the owner were not located in the police force area it were found in the final option would be to send the passport to the United Kingdom identity and passport service for that organisation to deal with.

This was Devon and Cornwall police. I was told ANY passport handed in is required to be sent to the home office for security purposes.

So D&C have a policy of returning all their handed in passports to the UK Passport office.
As i say different police forces have different ways of dealing with them, clearly sending them to the passport office is not destroying them as you originally stated.

Lol, im sure the passport people did all they could to track down the owner befor inevitably destroying it after a time period and getting no response from the owner.

I lost my passport during one of three house moves, i later found out that the passport office sent letters to me at all of my addresses that i had ever been officially registered to.
In the end i got a letter and was able to provide proof i was who i was and had it courierd to me.

as for finders keepers - i once found £55 but spotted a lady frantically searching near and asked what she was looking for.... honest conscience.... dammit

I found an Amazon delivery on my doorstep, opened it as I was expecting something and turns out it was a laptop (nice one too).
Then I got a panicked phonecall from the delivery chap the next day asking for it back... :(

Also once found someones car keys . . . . only thing was they were in the door of the car in a car park at the time! So i locked their car up, left a note and took the keys home. Got £10 and a crate of beer for my trouble!

I got a new laptop in November. Long story short its an 18.4" screen and its got media buttons on a glass panel to the right of the keyboard, the first one they sent had a tiny crack in the glass so I complained and they sent a new one. They told me they would collect the other one at the same time yet its still with me to this day!

Well done. It's a pity the 'thieves' who find mobile phones don't try a little bit of detective work, like maybe calling a couple of numbers in the phone, instead of stealing them.
