hi weve got some small fire alarms in our house and the one on the landing started beeping every minute or so the other night, my partner had a quick look at it and couldnt get it off and noticed it said battery not replaceable, were thinking maybe the fire brigade fitted it as weve never come across one that you cant replace the batteries or is that normal these days.

if the battery isn't replaceable are you sure its not wired into the mains as well?

i thought that, but ive no idea, how would we know if it is as were not clued up on electrical stuff.

Take it off, then look for a slider switch in one of the gaps. It really should stop once it is taken off the ceiling as this disengages the battery power.

BTW. You can't change the batteries in those fitted by the fire brigade.

will get my partner to have another look when hes out of bed, it did stop the other night after he messed with it but obviously i want it sorting out proper incase of a fire. if we have no luck with it then i might just give the local fire station a ring, i just dont want to sound like a plonker if they didnt fit it.

+1 They would far rather come to your house for this than to put out a fire there.

Some smoke alarms have batteries that have a finite lifespan and aren't hard wired into the circuit. You need to replace them.

Hi,
if it's an alarm fitted by firebrigade they have a ten year battery in them and can't be replaced you just bin the full unit.
It will bleep if you've pressed the reset button for eight minutes,or if you havent lined the pins up properly when you've put it back up, they can be a pain.
Just call the local firestation (not 999) and they'll come and replace it for you and they won't mind,we do it all the time and do get faulty ones along the way.
If it's not a fire brigade one they'll still replace it for you and any others that you may need and a fire safety check too, free.
