one im specifically looking for is spell check..! Opera has this on its latest version, it highlights words in red underline as you type if it thinks it is incorrect.. keeps me in track of writing proper english instead of textspeak online..!

Thanks for your help..! I'll be google searching in the mean time..

Firefox has a built in spell checker. No add-on required.

Here's how to enable it:
1. Go to the "Preferences" / "Options" menu under "Tools" or "Edit" (depending on your Operating System).. Think it's Tools --> Options on Windows.
2. Click the "Advanced" tab
3. Check the box next to "Check my spelling as I type"

Also.. download the British language pack (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3366) if British spellings are incorrectly being identified as wrong (e.g. "colour")

Dictionary tooltip is also very good. Instant pop up dictionary for any word you double-click.

Don't forget Adblock Plus

I tried that for a while but just found it incredibly annoying as it kept popping up for every fresh site I visited.

What benefit does it have over the built in firefox pop up blocker which seems to do the job for me?

wahh? it works great with me...once you installed it make sure you sign up to a filter subscription (basically a list that some dude has compiled with all the ads so you don't need to do a thing!)

Maybe thats why it keeps prompting you? to ask you whether it should block or unblock?

and i think firefox only has a built in anti pop up thing, this blocks ads too!

ADP preferences - filters - add filter subscription - Easylist (USA) (free)

thanks but I dont see any benefit from blocking ads except bandwidth. I have 10mbps so every page loads uber quick anyway. and of course adblock must do a lot of work checking the loaded pages against its filters so would probably have a negative effect for me.
