First setting up an Ipod touch/home internet connection query

Can anybody that has an ipod touch help me out. I've just gotten hold of a new ipod touch for my friend who is having trouble setting it up. Apparently he can put stuff onto the ipod and play it on that ok but when he plugs the touch into the computer, it doesn't show up in itunes and tell him what's on it? He says he gets to a screen where it says something about 'getting started' but there's no buttons or anything on the screen to click and can't go any futher.
Does anybody have any idea what's going on?
Also just looking at the instructions on the apple website it says requires internet connection, which he doesn't have at home. Do you HAVE to have a computer with internet access when you originally set it up?
Thanks in advance :)

well you need to download itunes first off so i guess you cant do that if you dont have an internet connection! If he alread yhas itunes then the youch should go through a registration process within itunes! dont see why it would need an internet connection to load music etc onto the ipod

Yeah, he already has itunes as he has several other ipod that he uses with no problems and has never been connected to the internet. Itunes may not be the very very latest version but it's only a few weeks old at most as i downloaded it for him. It's as if it's trying to go through the registration process but the buttons he needs to click etc to do so aren't showing!?

Aww dammit!! Do you happen to know if i registered it on my computer with my itunes account it'd let him use it afterwards or does it HAVE to be registered with the computer that will sync the music to it?

it will let him sync music from his computer but the apps he purchases/downloads will show on your account

I've registered on my apple account and put a few applicatiosn on it for him. He'd be happy as long as it'll let him just control his music himself on his own computer. That's all he's fussed about really, not the apps etc. Fingers crossed now he'll be able to add/remove music himself on his own computer when he tests it now :)
Thanks for your help :)
