Hi all, Im wondering if any fellow fisk keepers could shed some light on my comet.
I have a tropical set up which i never have problems with. Its my poorly gold fish im worried about.
About 10 days ago i noticed my comet was acting abit weird, in that i mean staying at the bottom, not swimming around, just going like rocking movements. I checked water with tests etc, all fine, but did water change anyway. My other comet was showing signs of dropsey so i treated the water etc etc initally i thought maybe this one was getting dropsey but total diff symptoms. The dropsey one is totally better, i added the healing salt to the tank whichs aids recovery from bacterial infections.

The comet in question has bulging eyes.... do yep i thought POPEYE however hes not responding to the treatment?? he hasnt eaten in 7 days, still silent at bottom of tank, hardly swimming.... im at a loss now what this means....

Water quality is spot in, I do partial water changes every 3 days to keep waste level low.
Ive read up on popeye and i cant find much on it....

ANY IDEAS?

thanks in advance

What temperature are you keeping the goldfish at? I know you can keep comets in a tropical system, but its not exactly highly recomended. The fish may have a parasite/bacterial infection, phone up your local maidenhead aquatics and ask to speak to someone who specialises in these things; they may take a scraping to see what is wrong and be able to properly diagnose from there.

Sounds like Nitrite poisoning

I have 2 set ups, one is tropical with tropical fish, the other is a cold water which is the one i have my fish in. So no heater etc. My OH is member of Practical Fishkeeping and has posted this question.

You think?

hmm what can i do :(
wouldnt this have effected my 2 fancy fish? as they are not as hardy as comets?

Sorry, thought they were all in the same tank !

How old is it ? Might be old age if it's affecting just the one fish.....

Its about a year old fish, and was very healthy indeed. Maybe it was bacterial infection, ? The other had dropsey and now this one is acting weird with bulging eyes.... but no visible signs on the body... and not eating at all ...

cheers hun, tried the peas, ive quarantined the black moore whos on its side with a bulging belly. I think im going too loose him, hes not moving at all, just still, One heck of a bacterial infection has it my tank at some time and this is the result. Just hope i dont loose all my fish.
Thanks all

Stop changing your water for a few days, whilst you are keeping the environment clean, you are also removing the good bacteria that helps maintain the tank.

It sounds like the goldfish is going to the bottom to escape the heat, you may find if you drop the temperature down a couple of degrees (within the realms of keeping your other fish in a pleasant environment) that he'll perk up.

The last few days of heat may have helped cause this.
