AUCTION website eBay has seen profits and sales tumble for the first time in its history.

The firm blamed lower consumer spending and the strength of the US dollar.

Profits in the final three months of 2008 plunged 31 per cent to £264million.

Revenues in its Marketplaces business dropped 16 per cent.

One giant I really would LOL if it collapsed.

That's fantastic. Recession doesn't diminish people's desire to buy, it just diminishes their desire to spend so much money. It also increases the desire to sell things. So how are eBay not cleaning up right now?
#5
I have to agree the fees are absolutely ridiculous
#6
such a shame thou lol :w00t:
#7
yeh im sure it should be up as people look for bargains...but i think less sellers means less £-i am selling a little but i find it hard to be positive about it as the fees are stupid and the rules worse..

It wouldn't be as good as you think. A lot of people have businesses on eBay and this is their main source of income. If eBay collapses then all of these people will struggle to sell the same amount of products. If they are not selling anything then they will not be buying any new stock in. The manufacturers could then go bust. A lot of jobs will be lost. Doesn't look so good now does it? I know the fees are high but they have to make money aswell.

I agree, I think that as the charges/fees are now so ridiculous, people are looking around for similar websites to sell their stuff on which can only be a good thing as it might give ebay a kick up the bum (or not as I guess it will be). I'm a sucker for punishment though as I have some stuff to sell and will stick it on ebay no doubt!!!
#12
Yes this is so true. they have not thought of the small sellers at all. They give the big discounts to the power sellers who have silver and above .
then there is thye paypal charges
WHAT A SCAM. come on Google .. make an auction and give fleabay a good old hiding

Most sellers have gone over to Amazon a long time a go, some are giving ebid the benefit of the doubt. Most sellers are making a lot more elsewhere................

Have you ever sold anything on Amazon. There is no point complaining about the fees on eBay and saying you can just go to Amazon. You don't have to pay to list the product but have to pay 17.25%. Plus you have t get it delivered to the customer by a set date.

Yes I have and found it much easier, my friend used to have an ebay business and is now on Amazon, it started as a way for her to make a few pennies and is now a full time business. I help her set it up and give her a hand every now and then if she needs it. It's where all my ebay paypal knowhow comes from ;-)

I still think eBay is great for both selling and buying. You can easily get a great bargin. Selling is great if you have the right item. IMO you get a lot more people seeing your item on eBay compared to Amazon. With Amazon it is great if you have it as an actual item rather than on the amazon marketplace. Also your not exactly going to sell your old stuff on Amazon. You need to think of all of the eBay users.

Screw ebay, like they've screwed everybody else. Btw I actually got a bargain earlier. First in ages

I used to dabble on ebay myself. fee's are TERRIBLE. It took 40 quid off me last week for selling 2 phones! 40 bloody quid! I agree lots of us would miss it but another auction site would spring up in its place and hopefully be cheaper!
#19
unless you are selling something big its really dear now-all of the profit goes by the time you take out Ebayer listing,, selling and Paypal fees. I used to sell loads of cheaper stuff-but i was losing money n it-so its just not bothering anymore.
#20
I have no problem with fees and agree that its a business and they need to make money but the fees are sooo high now!!! Paypal used to be free unless you took the money out of it to your bank account, so if you left it in there and used it again on ebay it was free, now you have to pay fees regardless!!!

Ebay fees dont need to be as high as they are!

Saying that anything that the profit is still that high in this current climate is good!! They could have bought woolworths out 20 times over!!!

I do that's why I would never use it as a personal/private seller to get rid of my old stuff, to many fees to easy to be scammed nowadays, I am still lost as to who ebay actually are appealing to right now, tbh :-(
It's definately great for buying though, buyers are king there!

Well I think they tried to do it where the buyer was in control eg. the feedback. eBay did however increase the FVF so that they could decrease the insertion fee. This should increase the number of items listed because there is not as much money being lost if you insert an item and it doesn't sell. Either way eBay makes me and many other people.

eBay are a business and need to make money. At this point I don't think their main business objective is customer satisfaction. I know if I was in control of eBay I woulld want it to make proft. Sometimes plans don't go the way they are meant to and this is one of those cases. We can't really tell how we would react if we were in charge of a big company like eBay. We should look at the positive things of the company and how it is doing things for the better.

I think some examples would be good.

I have never sold on ebay, how much do they charge then?
#24
what a weak excuse, did they not realise most people are not idiots and wont pay for a very expensive service they have on offer.

Glad they been hit hard, they now need to realise that raising fee's for profits isn't the right thing to do! without the people ebay is nothing but a name, i guess they forgot this.

Well thats easy. Umm... Just let me think

Buyers can get great deals and buying the item is totally safe.
Trying to get rid of all of fake goods off the site.
Sellers should find it better to list an item because there is less of a risk of them losing out of their money from the low insertion fees.
More frequent cheap listing days along with long-running promotional offers.

That any good for you. I am only trying to stick up for a company. It could be really difficult for the company at the moment. they are trying to make everyone happy but instead everyone is moaning about how useless they are.

They must make quite a bit from advertising. Whatever way you look at it everyone isn't just going to disappear from eBay. For many people it is their full time job to sell on there. There are not that many brilliant sites to sell their stuff.

i used to sell loads of stuff on ebay, for myself friends and family and only second hand stuff clothes baby stuff etc and made quite a bit, but now by the time ive paid all the fees to ebay and pp and then posted them its hardley worth all the time and effort it takes, especially with the "sellers can no longer leave neg for buyer"

I do still buy lots on there thou

1. Totally safe? I know many ways I could scam a buyer, with virtually zero effort.
2. And how many genuine sellers get hit by VERO abuse? Just read the ebay forums to find out. Terrible. Of course the only reason for their anti fake drive was because they were taken to court over fakes. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7481241.stm
3. They may have to pay less to list but sure as hell get hit with FVF and paypal fees.
4. Promotions. Seen the latest?

From 27th January until 31st March 2009, when you offer free domestic P&P* in the DVD sub-category of the DVD, Film and TV category, we'll reduce your Final Value Fee by 25% for each item.]

So most people are after a bargain and want something cheap. Lets say a £4 DVD thanks to sellers increasing their prices to offset the ridiculous FVF on media products. So the seller gets 10p off their FVF and has to pay what £1-1.50 for postage. Brilliant

Christmas before last I bought about 200 items via ebay, last christmas I bought about 4. Mostly because there are very few bargains on there any more. I don't blame the sellers, they HAVE to pass the cost on else it becomes pointless. Therefore I must blame the source of that increase, ebay. They've completely forgotten their roots and now they pay the price.

I'm glad to hear their profits have taken a hit. All they have done is try to please share holders with bigger profits year on year but have forgotten about the community of sellers.

Thats because they are

Buyers are getting less and less great deals as loads of sellers are leaving

Fake goods? Easy to get rid of loads, ban chinese sellers from pretending they are in uk.

Sellers find it worse, the search changes killed ebay for all but the big sellers. Sellers can't leave negs, therefore buyers are leaving more (and resulting in sellers items appearing lower in the search), and also trying to scam the sellers (just look at all the threads on here for evidence of this).

I stopped selling on ebay around 6 months ago properly, I tried again at Christmas, what a waste of time that was. For example, summer last year I was selling packs of 10 Maybelline lipsticks starting at 1p, with postage of £2. I sold over 150 packs, about 95% of them went over £2, the rest went for about £1, every single one sold.
I decided to list some more at the end of November (after the search was changed), out of 30 packs I listed, i think about half sold, not one for more than £1.50.
Last Christmas I sold 105 bottles of a certain branded perfume for £9.99 (which was around £15 cheaper than the cheapest anywhere else).
I put them on again this year, same time of year, same price, postage, only one other person selling it (at a higher price), I sold 3.

If ebay want to get rid of the smaller sellers, then all they will achieve is to get rid of buyers too as the choice goes down, prices go up. They can't complain when profits drop.

Is it this month when the postage changes come in so that you have to offer free p&p on dvds? Yeah that will get more people listing!

These are my stats for the past 90 days

Items Sold: 9.15%
Total Value Sold: £110.42
Total Value Shipping: £120.37
Total Value Not Sold: £3670.72

Last Xmas almsot half of everything I listed sold, quite a drop to 9%

The thing with the search was that as a buyer i prefered it the old way, sure it doesnt get everything i want right away but i enjoyed looking through ones that were about to end etc and dont like using the best match
