It's been donkeys' years since we went to the USA and we're finally going back in April. Flights and hotels are all arranged but car rental is yet to be sorted out - anyone got any tips for getting a cracking deal on a rental, and how to avoid getting scalped for insurance too?

Highly recommend Enterprise. Used them lots over there with no problems at all.

We have used carhire3000 a few times when going to florida. They use dollar.
If you call them up instead of booking online you can usually get around an extra 10% off, and if you get a better quote from anyone else they will beat it.

Thanks - might give that a go. Found an ok-ish deal with Alamo via e-bookers but if these guys will beat that then that would be great.

I'd happily pay EXTRA to AVOID dollar and nowadays ALWAYS use Alamo when landing at Sanford.

Dollar are rude, pushy, tell you you "have to buy" breakdown assistance at £6 a day when you do NOT need to, won't take no for an answer, give you no choice of cars.

Alamo on the other hand don't try to push extras or upgrades onto you and when you go outside they show you the selection of cars you can choose from, yes you get a bloody choice of which car/model/colour you take relevant to what you booked of course BUT you can pick one with a bigger boot than the other model etc etc something dollar have NEVER done EVER.

We go 2-3 times a year and ALWAYS book alamo now and generally prices with usarentacar are the cheapest we can find. HERE

I would use Dollar everytime they now have a UK site http://www.dollar.co.uk, also sign up for the preferred customer card and go to the front of the queue.

We go every year and never have a problem with them and are cheaper than all the others now as they cut out the middle man.

Also with preffered card we usually get an upgrade for free too!

If you book with Dollar the price you see is the price you pay, nothing else to pay when you get there only for the full tank of gas usually $50 which you have with all car companies.

We have booked through us rent a car and taken the car hire with Budget. They offer a free upgrade (if available...) and an extra driver for free which is the bit that swung it for us as it kept the cost down. We had them recommended to us by the villa owners.

I use http://www.discountfloridacarhire.co.uk. They use Dollar and Budget and are the cheapest prices i've come across. Using them when I go in September.. Can't wait
