Football...........CLUB or country ???????????????????? Which is it? (Unofficial poll within)

.

Sooooooo the world cup is soon underway and with places in the England team under scrutiny with fans calling for their favourite players to get the final places and get on the plane to play for country, it dawned on me.................

What is more important to you in Football? ie who would it mean more to you to see do well?

(a) Your Country
(b) Your club
(c) You have no preference or "support" a country who could never do well anyway so not relevant - or dont care.

This isn't asking if you want England to do well (since its a general question... and whatever Nationaility you are or support, the question is still valid since I'm not talking necesarily about this world cup.)

Me?

(a) Seeing my team (Spurs) do well is far more significant to me than seeing my Country (England)

It would be interesting to see which club / Country your loyalty lies with. (See next post )

It doesnt matter if your team is Accrington Stanley and Nationality/ Prefered country to support is Botswana............ No need to give any reasons, but feel free to do so if you wish.

No trolling or tears allowed in this thread please.

Club Chelsea (2010 Double Winners)
Country England

It's club for me - although if you had asked me same question 15 years ago when we were not winning anything and just a run of the mill Spurs like club, then it would have been country.

Guv - love your location, think I had better change mine to - Top of the league having a laugh looking down at all the tiny clubs :whistling:

Being very patriotic my country comes first. I will always support England over anything else, and have done since my teens when i first started going to National games.

Even though this country is in such a crap state i think its the one thing that brings us all together... bring on the World Cup !

But hey... each to their own when it comes to footy !

Deffo country first for me, to see England lift the world cup would be incredible.

Not surprised.

Slightly surprised. You are not as partisan as some club supporters despite obviously been a big football fan.

its got to be club first and we have had it rough

but wish the big clubs use more home grown talent instead of all these foreigners
then we would end up with more top English players to pick from

On the contrary I am as passionate about the Villa as most but there is something about England that means more to me to see them do well. Maybe because it's only every 4 years so you don't get much chance of seeing your country actually win it. Perhaps it's because I've seen Villa lift every cup apart from the FA Cup already.

World cup wins go down in history (look at 66), we won the European Cup around 30 years ago and not many remember it now.
#15
there was a survey in the newspaper last week asking a similar question and overwhelmingly people said their club was more important. However the majority of men also said they would go a year without sex if it meant their country winning the world cup!

my club is hibs, but if it meant Scotland winning the world cup,I would probably accept even relegation for my club(we would get back up!)

Thats true..... I dont remember you winning it! :w00t: (I do really... though I remember Forest beating Malmo better since I went to the game in Munich!)

Perhaps partisan wasnt the correct word. I'll go for more "level headed".

Definitely level headed, I support every English team in the ECL games and have no hate for any other team really not even the blues, I prefer good old bnater rather than one eyed love / hatred.

Interesting about the poll as I would say a fair percentage support the top 4 or 5 who generally win most cups within a short time span and therefore would have thought they saw enough club success and wanted some national success.

Like others have said... i support every English, and even British, clubs in European games. I always say bring them silverware back to these shores even if its a club i dont usually cheer on (except Southampton - but im a Pompey supporter lol!).

So yes Pompey is my home club and have been watching them since i was little. Been through the minor leagues with them, seen them into and out of the Premiership, been to lots of away games in my younger years and had the crack, also seen them at Wembley over the past 2 years and lift the FA Cup. But yes they are now in a bit of trouble and relegated - but hey thats footy and what bad management and dodgy dealings behind closed doors does to football. Too many so called offshore 'investers' that promise the earth then dont deliver ! Youve only gotta look at most Premiership clubs atm to see whats going on with our National game.

But that aside and nothing to do with whats going on at Fratton Park atm - England will always be my favoured passion.

on another, but similar note..
I'd rather Darren Bent NOT play in the 2010WC, then actually play and get injured..

Guess I went CLUB over COUNTRY!

tbh, most people would choose England UNTIL they were knocked out (ie: after their 3rd game!) :whistling:

Sorry.... Just needed to point out an error!

The top 4 may have won the most cups.... but deffo not the top 5. (No hate!) :w00t:

Likewise, I generally want to see English clubs do well though that is most definately extended to Arsenal. "Nayim from the halfway line" is still a clear magical football moment for me!

Im not a jock by birth but my grandma was from glasgow, so taken her side of support. always pinpoint a time from why I never really saw the need to support England. in Italia 90 when England played Ireland I couldnt understand why i should 'like' Gary Lineker, Barnes etc. They all played for different clubs back home. I was 10 at the time and just couldnt get my head around it and its stayed with me since.

So I decided to enjoy the international games rather than go mad etc. And to add, in 98 I was in a pub watching the Eng v Arg pen shootout & someone kindly decided to launch a pint glass when hit me on the head. Typical England cranks.....

It's got to be country for me, you get more satisfaction watching your countrymen try to do well than watching a team half filled with foreigners.

Club for me. Personally I'd be happier seeing Torres or Reina lift the trophy than I would John Terry or Wayne Rooney.

whats up with this flippin country and this forum why when it comes to england no one backs them so we had a few bad tournaments it dosnt mean we stop supporting them all together

all these people who say i wouldnt care if we got knocked out int he groups that makes we sick we need to support the 3 lions and back the bid for 2018

id rather by club get releagted to non league football than to stop england winning the world cup id like to see how many of you who dont care much for england will be chearing them on if we get to the final

have you looked at the posts froms the scots on here all of them have said they would back there country over there club because they have passion for there country people in england have no loyalty to this country anymore and its about time if fricking changed :x

Don't worry because if we were to ever win the World Cup they'd also be the first to say they are England through and through and were behind them all the way.

Another one here for club. Not really interested in England probably due to the number of a-holes in the team who you know if they weren't footballers with tons of money would be out on a weekend in groups fighting anyone that 'looked at their bird!' Saying that, half of them do that anyway! :-D

Club: Leicester
Country: England

I like to see Leicester do well but I know I would be far more tense if England were in the World CUp semifinal than when Leicester were in the playoff semifinal. Wierd as with rugby I am almost complete opposite where I really follow Leicester Tigers but the national team are more of a distraction than a passion these days.

I'll put you down as a not sure then! :w00t:

Of course I want England to do well. I'd be getting as drunk as the next fan to celebrate.... I just have more love of my club team than my national team, who might even have players from teams I hate. (Though unlikely as Ars*nal palayers are mostly foreign!)

I think your losing sight a little. I'd always want England to win and most would feel the same way I'd think (who are English of course!)

We don't produce particularly good quality homegrown talent anymore and any decent ones are ridiculously overprices, so the big teams naturally end up going for what they see as better value.

Anyway, for me, my club Liverpool over country no question.
The club is where I pay my money everytime and follow round Europe. I've never had the same desire or passion to do the same for an Ing-ur-lund game.

Anyway, I find it's usually those who never venture out of a pub to watch the game who say you should support your country before your club. Telly clapping biffs.:whistling:

If Scotland ever get the chance to win anything they would always get my support before the Villa do. I don't think I'll have much to worry about in my life time though.:whistling:

you should have more love your countrys team and cheer them on to the very end rather than supporting your club which maybe full of pre madonnas just playing for the money and glory rather than for the passion of winning no player plays for the love of the club anymore they all pay for who will pay them more and what they can get out of it u have to go down to the lower leagues to see good passion in club football

Why? No-one has to be patriotic.

club: Leeds Utd
country: Wales/England

It's Leeds every time.

Wales never do well at football and I have never really followed their fortunes; not like RU!!

I have always 'supported' England at football ( all the Welsh guys who qualify to play for England do so anyway), but given a choice between England winning the World Cup and Leeds getting promoted again , I'd take Leeds.

A few bad tournaments??????

Personally I will have £200 on engerland going out in the semis.

Why should I feel patriotic, if I dont feel patriotic, this country is only my home, because my stuff is here.
