Big Sam suggested that Chelsea players may have caught it after Saturday but nothing so far. But Bolton have also got confirmed cases.

I can see football being hit if it spreads too much........not because of the players but the risk of spreading in high capacity crowds later on in the winter.

health protection agency mate.....your neck of the woods

sounds like someone who just hates people spitting to me......athletes get a build up of salive in their mouths .......even riding the mountain bike i occasionally find my self spitting

The HPA's advice warns footballers against spitting, and looks to them as role models for the public to follow.

"Spitting is disgusting at all times. It's unhygienic and unhealthy, particularly if you spit close to other people," said an HPA spokesman.

"Footballers, like the rest of us, wouldn't spit indoors so they shouldn't do it on the football pitch.

"If they are spitting near other people it could certainly increase the risk of passing on infections.

"It's about setting examples for young people who idolise them."

I always spit when I'm playing football (sometimes in the face of an opponent).

Spitting feels natural in football, especially when you have a cold.

Thankfully that doesn't reflect on me, as the HPA are based in England and have no remit north of the border.

What a daft statement for them to make.
