Foreign Films...

Having just watched Pans Labyrinth (I tried so hard to get to watch it at the cinema but was unfortunatley unsuccesful) I am back to thinking about foreign movies (ie anything that isnt british or american).

I do like watching world cinema though I will admit I see no where near as much of it as I like, does anyone have any good recommendations, for not just japanese movies but for any country? My favourite film is Battle Royale and I throughly enjoyed Pans last night, however I realise that I must still be missing out on so many great films out there, not just the ones that are more popular eg Oldboy, Ring, Flying daggers etc. but films that don't get the publicity over here.

As a big kid I love fantasy but also love cheesy horrors gore etc.

What are your favs?

Also do you prefer to watch dubbed or with subtitles?

If I'm watching a 'real' film I prefer subtitles, however if I'm watching cartoons or anime then I'm happy doing either as long as they have put thought into the dubbing and not made it sound stupid.

Cidade De Deus (City Of God) is WELL worth a watch:

Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Cidade de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Douglas Silva) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts.

Nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2004 Oscars.

Das Boot another good one.

I'd go with subtitles every time, dubbing is the height of naffness. A few foreign language films I like are:

Nikita
Les Visiteurs (both of which have had inferior hollywood remakes)
Stalingrad - best war film ever IMHO, made by them same people as Das Boot

Gaia is right - Amelie is so very good. Also a Very Long Engagement, and City of Lost Children.

Haute Tension is a good french horror, by the guy who made the remake of Hills Have Eyes.

Battle Royale and Hero are worth investigating.

I'm in to mainly oriental cinema which most western directors have nicked huge chunks (or even whole films) from. Infernal Affairs was the basis for The Departed (and it's better to, as well as the sequel)

Roshomon
Seven Samurai
Spirited Away / Howl's Moving Castle
anything Jackie Chan
#11
Das Experiment
Tsotsi
OldBoy
City of God

More to come...

Happiness of the Katakuris (you'll like that one :))
Run Lola Run
Sonatine
Steamboy (anime)
Uzak
Memories of Murder
Tale of two sisters
#12
The Red Balloon (Virtually a silent movie anyway!)
Kramer vs Kramer - subtitled, brilliant film
#13
Until the end of the world (Bis ans Ende der Welt ) the full 280 minute version - multi languages all the way through - English / French / Italian / Japanese / German

Some of my faves have already been mentioned, Das Boot, Amelie, Taxi (top film) have all been mentioned.
Nikita (remade as the Assassin) is another stylish film.....

The only bad thing about some of the top foreign films are the American remakes which are usually rubbish in comparison to the original....

Happiness of the Katas I've seen (and in fact own lol) but I really felt like it had stolen time from my life that I'd never get back lol.

I have all the studio ghibli anime movies though I have only so far watched spirited away, totoro, kiki's and part of cat returns.

Tale of 2 sisters I've heard of though can't remember what its about and have wanted to watch Ichi the killer for a while so will have to get round to it. Will defo look into all the ones mentioned on imdb though see if they are my thing. Unfortunatley most of my friends dont own a lot of world cinema (well except one who has a lot of anime) but it means i usually give them recommendations instead of the other way around.
