Is it the bios password or is it the windows logon password?

Just put a windows/restore/linux disc in, format and reinstall.

Presuming you have nothing that needs recovering or anything you wouldn't want someone else to recover.

How much do those disks cost? I don't need anything that's on the laptop

I think it's the windows log on. Where it says administrator then asks for a password

Start computer and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ++ keys twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.
Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".
Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

Thr freezer method only works in films or if its a bios password

Type into google windows xp password find and their are several sites which you download a small program put it on disk and insert into laptop. This will download the encryption password file. Upload this file onto the web site most will either charge you if you want it today some will do it for free after 48 hours. I did this at christmas to unlock a cheapy I bought and after the 48 hours a list of passwords emailed back to me

Yup you can just get a disk to remove the password, but if you are selling it. I'd format it and put windows on again unless you want to sell a load of private data with it.

Good advice as you may not get rid of all the data you think you have.

I Suggest using DBAN (do a google for it) and then re-install the OS. You may have got recovery disks with the laptop in that case use them to do the re-install.

One bit of software needed - http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

Thats it. Download that ISO, burn it to a blank disc, slam it in the laptop and boot from the cd. Let it then scan and it will tell you the password.

Its so simple.
