Yes, direct news from the Blackpool Tourism office before it even hits the press. We already knew that the TOP GEAR trio would be flicking the switch to turn on the lights, but Radio 2 have just announced the line-up of bands who will be performing.

They are...

BOYZONE, SCOUTING FOR GIRLS and singer-songwriter DAVID JORDAN.

Radio 2 presenter JANICE LONG will be the host, and pre-how entertainment from 6pm will include Manchester Pop Idol SARAH WHATMORE and local funny man JOEY BLOWER.

Designer LAWRENCE LLEWELYN-BOWEN will be on stage to talk about his new feature at this year's illuminations too.

THIS YEAR'S SHOW IS ON FRIDAY, 29TH AUGUST 2008. The event begins with pre-show entertainment at 6pm and the Radio 2 show begins at 8pm or 8.30pm (I'm not sure which - although you'd need to be there long before this time in order to get a place). The Radio 2 show will be broadcast live on Radio 2, and will culminate in the Top Gear switch-on at approximately 9.25pm.

The illuminations will be on that night until 1am on the Saturday morning. The illuminations will then run for 66 consecutive nights until November 2nd, 2008 (which is the close of the Blackpool season this year).

Hope that helps peeps!

do you work for blackpool tourist board.....???
Illuminations are aright I suppose...... but Boyzone......sorry blackpool should now be avoided for that reason only....:giggle:

I'm not a fan of Boyzone at all, but I know lots of peeps who have paid to see them so there must be some sort of appeal. :p

And no, I don't work for the Blackpool Tourist Board - I just got the message through from their head honcho on Facebook. They've got very good public relations around here (if you can be bothered with them). And, of course, I love the multitude of FREE events I get to see in Blackpool which far exceeds the number of events in any other town I know of (air races and Spitfire fly-pasts spring to mind).

Don't forget the International Fireworks Competition. The 1st display is the Saturday after the lights switch on. Always worth a look.

There's currently a discount code for pleasure beach wristbands when you buy online:

They're excellent. For the best views you want to be between North and Central Piers - preferably closer to North Pier. The reason is that the fireworks are timed (superbly) to music and being in hearing range of the speakers makes a big difference to the display. :)
