Not sure where to put this, as technically it's not really a deal, more of a heads up !

I've just had a courtesy call from a nice chap from Virgin Media,
checking everything was ok with my recently installed services (which it is).
At the end of the conversation he asked if there was anything Virgin Media could do to improve the service they provide me.
Actual yes there is i said, i had free caller display when i was with BT,
and you want £2 per month for it, i would like it for free please.
Certainly Sir, was his reply ! As a matter of fact we are rolling out free caller display to ALL of our customers as of October.

Thought this might be of use to other people, as i can't see it mentioned anywhere on the Virgin Media website.
I am assuming they will be updating the site and letting customers know as of next week !

Sounds good, do you need a special phone or will any with some kind of display work with this?

I'm sure any phone with a display will work fine, perhaps not BT branded phones though !

i will believe it when i see it in black and white on there web site(_;)

I can confirm this is true as I work for them:

The roll out of Free Caller Display will start at the end of September 2010 and is expected to be completed during March 2011.

All new customers will be provisioned with Caller Display as default from mid-October onwards.

As part of rolling this out to all customers, where Caller Display is not currently available, we’ll make appropriate upgrades to the network and also ensure current provisioning issues are fixed.

Hi I think you'll find that you've just extended your contract with Virgin by 18 months!!!

I don't think so ! I've only just been installed 4 weeks ago, so it was definately NOT some sort of con to get me to extend my contract !!

excellent news - at least now I'll be able to see who it is that I'm ignoring :)
#12
i pay for it ....will it get taken off my bill?
#13
Excellent! - no caller display (without forking out) has been my only gripe with Virgin to date. Otherwise their customer service has been great, and a good excuse not to throw more money at certain other media empires!!

Probably best to give them a call, as it looks like different areas will be getting it free before others !

Most BT branded phones will work. Just depends on the model range as different companies manufacturer them and then also depends on which area you are in, as some cable areas use the Bellcore standard, others ETSI FSK With PR(UK) standard which BT use.

Funny. I've been willing to *pay* for caller ID but for some absurd reason it's not even been available where I am. Double bonus for being free and provisioning it I guess.

Take it this is all due to BT taking over several months ago looking after the phone network provisioning under contract?

It will be taken off. Not straight away, but when your particular area is provisioned for free. So sometime between now and March

Bt dont provision our telephone networks. It is old equipment in certain exchanges when they were initially set up long before virgin/ntl/telewest were on the scene

No worries, maybe I was getting mixed up with what the contract etc involved:

BT Managed Services will take on the operation and maintenance of Virgin Media’s UK fixed-line voice switching network, while Virgin Media will enjoy reduced costs and greater freedom to focus on developing its future business. Virgin Media’s fixed-line voice network supports around 20 percent of all landline telephone connections in the UK. 184 skilled Virgin Media employees will transfer under TUPE to BT as part of the agreement.

Thanks OP, I just rang them and they confirmed it's rolling out from 1 Oct and have added it to my service for free from today. Only a couple of days extra, but I've wanted it for ages, but not wanted to pay the extra £2 pm.

thanks guys :)

Are we sure this is correct?

I posted on the Virgin Media Forums checking this and they didn't seem to know anything about it... :(

Their reply:
This is not something that we have been made aware of. We have recently undergone a major upgrade on much of the ex-ntl network to add caller display so it is available in the vast majority of areas except:
Bournemouth
Brighton
Bromley
Derby
Portsmouth
Hersham.

As far as I am aware, there are no plans to upgrade just at the moment but Im sure this is something that we will hope to do at some point in the future

Just got it applied to my line.
I am in Leeds.

I had to go through disconnections because the first line support don't have the authority to set it up for free.
#27
Just spoken with customer services in Scotland and a very pleasant young lady denied knowing anything of this. In fact she told me that she pays £2.25 a month for her caller ID.
Surely the previous comments ar not urban myth !
I was told the only way I would get Free caller ID (perhaps) was to haggle with disconnectio team at the end of contract.
A case of one hand not Knowing what the other is doing ????

Let me blow the cobwebs off, as this thread is over 2 years old oO, so chances are they no longer offer it, or the terms have changed ?
#29
In 2016 They're still trying to charge for the service as standard. Anyone got any recent experience of getting this reversed? Given all the nuisance calls this really should be included!

I called up to complain about a price increase a few months back. They said they couldn't prevent the increase, but could remove the cost of caller display as a goodwill gesture.

Cheers miikeyblue - reassuring to hear they're willing to consider this. Having seen repeated price hikes over the years we're needing to go through the 'call up and threaten to leave' process again, so will try to get this included in our new deal:-)

Is this now free, can only see £2.35 PM every where?

This was posted over 6 years ago ! So chances are it's not free anymore.
I can't confirm one way or the other, as I'm now with sky.

FWIW, I re-negotiated last year when I got call blocker phones, and got caller display included as part of the deal. Pretty sure it wouldn't have been included automatically, but didn't get the impression there was anything controversial, so my advice is - JUST ASK :-)
