BT £24m giveaway helps 14m customers say no to 0870

BT today offered some New Year cheer to 14 million customers by becoming the first UK telephone company to make calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers free.

Customers have often complained that their calling packages did not include the 0870 and 0845 numbers which are frequently used by banks, insurance companies and even doctors surgeries.

Calls to these numbers cost more than usual, with Sky and Virgin charging around 10p a minute for a daytime 0870 call.

BT has always charged much cheaper rates, but has now decided to go even further. In a move costing BT tens of millions, the company has decided to give customers what they want by including 0870 and 0845 numbers in call packages.*

An Anytime customer will now get their calls to these numbers for free as well as all their calls to UK landlines and great rates on mobile calls for just £4.85 a month, which works out at less than the cost of a second class stamp a day.

A customer who is on the Evening and Weekend package will get their 0870 and 0845 calls for free, as well as their UK landline calls, after 6pm every day and all weekend.

No UK phone company has ever included these call types in their packages before, because 0845 and 0870 numbers generate large revenues for the banks, utility firms and other organisations that use them.

However, customers resented the high charges for 0870 and 0845 numbers, especially as the organisations using them were seen to be making a profit from them. Campaigners even set up a web site to let customers know other numbers to call the same companies, called saynoto0870.

The Government recently announced a review of doctors and NHS departments using 084 numbers, because customers complained they should not be charged more to call for medical help.

John Petter, managing director of BTs Consumer business, said: We know that the public is frustrated by having to pay higher charges for these numbers, even though BTs rates were cheaper than our rivals, so we worked out a way to go further and include calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers in our call packages.

These numbers are widely used by banks, utilities and even NHS Direct, and our customers spend 30 minutes a month on average calling these numbers. We hope we have taken a sting out of the price of these calls, but also removed one of those irritations that customers believed was an unfair anomaly.

All of our 14m calls customers have free calls included in their package and now all 14m have free calls to 0870 and 0845 at times that fit with their calling plan, which is something not offered by any of our competitors.

*excludes ISP dial-up numbers and indirect access numbers. Full details at bt.com.

The table below shows how much you can save on a 10-minute call made on a Saturday morning:

I agree with the concept of SayNo to 0870 but some companies just aren't listed and it's free to BT customer on the free evening and weekend plan (as well as the £5 all day plan) which is all good!

Lets hope NTL follow suit.
I'd like to vote hot, but there is no button to click on.

Does this count for BT business accounts?

Voted Hot. You can get Free Evening and weekend calls for free from BT if you agree to sign up to a 12 month contract. So this means all my calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers will now be free evening and weekends with no additional cost above the standard BT line rental.

Fair play to BT they are taking the hit for this because they still have to pay then end companies profiting from these numbers.

Many companies have switched to using 0844 or 0871 numbers, not as big a hit as BT will have people believe.

Shame BT haven't included 0871, 0844 and the new 03 numbers.

Also annoying that the calls are only free when most customer services / helplines are closed (evenings / weekends).

Good point, I would've thought 03 was included? No?

It's nothing to do with being happy, I'm just pointing out that BT are not doing everyone the massive favour they are implying they are.

Couldn't read the whole OP, do you need to pay £4.85 a month for this? Don't think I'd be making £4.85 of calls a month anway.
#13
I'm on BT anytime. Very happy with this as it saves looking up the regional number for 0870 and 0845. Thanks

Will 0871 and 0844 numbers will be added?

Dear friends,

I have been told that there is a "fair usage policy for making 0870 and 0845 calls – max. 1,000 mins or 150 calls a month. If either of these limits on free calls is exceeded, BT will charge for these calls until further notice".

I wanted to know exactly what it means by saying "max. 1,000 mins or 150 calls a month".
What is that 'a month' period they are considering.

* Is it the month from my Billing date or
* is it 1st of every month or
* is it last 30 days usage.

Can you please let me know how they are calculating

If we take it as an example like my bill has been produced on 6th July for the period of 6th July - 5th August. Can I use this 1000 minutes or 150 calls of 0870 or 0845 calls between 6th July - 5th August anytime or do I need to consider any other dates.
For example-
My billing date - 6th July
Billing period - 6th July - 5th August
1. If I use 200 minutes between 6th of July to 15th July, how many minutes will be remaining at the end of 15th July? I expect that as 800 minutes left till 5th August.
2. In the same month suppose if I have used 200 on 4th July (which is outside my current billing period 6th July - 5th Aug) and used 200 minutes between 6th of July to 15th July, how many minutes will be remaining at the end of 15th July?
does this comes under this 1000 minutes or 150 calls limit?

Anybody have an idea about this kind of situation....

Please let me know guys...hope you guys understand what I am asking for.

Thank you
