FREEVIEW worth it?

Right,
My mates and I are moving into a new house soon, and (being students) we don't really think we can justify a full cable or satelite TV connnection.

We have seen freeview boxes around, and are considering it. I've seen the list of channels available, but are they actually any good?

Also, the number of freeview boxes available is really big. Is there a big difference between ones from say Sony and some smaller name brand. Some of them are bloody expensive.

Cheers for any help!

Nick

I've never tried it so I don't know. I think in some areas you can't get a signal for it, or only a poor signal though.

There is a stackable coupon in the Dixons section here for a freeview box though if you do decide to buy one.

Freeview is fine... You could also consider TopUpTV... £7.99 a month for E4, Discovery and UK Gold... (others are crap)...
TUTV box costs £73 Delivered...

You can get a freeview box for around £40...

Hey,
thanks, I'll look into that TopupTV, though I thouhgt freeview has UKgold. Thanks again.

UK Gold isn't included in Freeview.

I think Freeview is good value for money. There is a good choice of news, history, music and shopping. Not many movies (at least not any new ones). Also no sport.

This page shows you the free channels. FREE TV + RADIO CHANNEL LIST

If you have very young children, the cbeebies + CBBC channels make good free entertainment for them :D

The music channels are also pretty good as is the choice of radio programmes. (Up on the right, in a drop down list on the above page).

This is a link to a free press pack, in PDF (Adobe Acrobat needed).

FREE PRESS PACK

On the website there is a "Postcode" checking facility, to see whether your area can receive Freeview.

POSTCODE CHECK

Hope this is useful :D

had it for over a year - watched it maybe 10 times

in my opinion, it isn't worth it for me but i do know many people who watch it all the time! depends on your choice of programmes i guess - i'd rather download great tv shows than watch trashy ones :)

We had an OnDigital box sitting around doing nothing, so we use that to get Freeview - definitely wouldn't have bothered if it meant spending over £40 for a box. We've tried TopUp TV, but it's not that good especially as a lot of the channels are only available for part of the day, whereas the same channel is available on full transmission on Sky. TUTV only has about 10 channels. :(

i hate this thing (not freeview, teh government!). co syou see, they're gonna switch off the trasmit ariel thing in 10 years or so & thus FORCING everyone to buy some form of digital stuff.... i mean, i dont wanna pay anymore than i have to & I'm perfectly OK with just the 5 channels i'm getting now!!

Saw a while ago -- http://news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=280&id=818542004 -- essentially unlikely to get done by 2010 now (The precedant of meeting a target being a scary prospect :) ) but at least 2012 accor4ding to Ofcom.

i wud def recommend it cos you get sky sport news

I got an ALBA freeview box from Argos for about £50 ended up watching Bid up TV and Price Drop TV, i'ts the best thing on the damn box, all those has been presenters, you can't stop watching it you always wonder what the next item was going to be and then they had the same items on both sides what a waste of time.

In the end Itook the thing back to Argos and demanded my money back under the trade discripitions act !!

   seriously?

jcsymons, thanks for making me laugh

You've got to get one just for skysports news. The amount of hours i have set there watching it.
You also get 2 music channels- the hits and TMF.

The channels are very limited, but for £40, it's pretty good!
#15
you could always keep your eyes open for a s/h sky digibox & dish... it will still supply all the freeveiw channels without subscribing... :D
#16
Then again, Freeview boxes are very cheap now anyway, so a new one for around £40.00p, no subscription, you get quite a few decent channels + digital picture.

what kinda music is on those channels?

I had freeview waste of money, signal in my area really poor, every time a bus went past my house the picture would freeze. The old lady over the road was terrable at parking she would take at least 10 minutes to park the reving of her engine would interfer with the picture. So you will be OK with it unless you don't stay on a bus route or you have a geriatric driver trying to park outside the house.

crappy chart stuff mainly.

you get quite a few radio channels too, but i can never see the point of tuning in to the radio on a tv.

LOL! thats unlucky! i guess the only solution for you would be to get a satellite receiver and get the free channels that they offer, as has been mentioned they provide quite a few free channels.

If you have it wired up through your Hi Fi or surround sound, the quality is excellent, BUT not worth it if you have a good radio receiver, as you say "no point".
#22
crappy pop isn't my thing at all.....

also, having Radio on TV is useful if you want to record it digitally. For me personally, i got a TV card in my PC & can record from tehre straight to mp/wav etc. Very easy to capture stuff.

With front page offer fairly cheap to try out now :)

thats true

BUT not worth it if you have a good radio receiver, as you say "no point".

also i think its a bit of a waste of resources, unless the hifi plugs straight into the digital receiver, rather than the tv, as you would need to have your digital receiver and your tv switched on, and tvs must use up quite a bit of electricity.
#26
Yep i think its worth it especially when you can get boxes for around the £30-£40 now. Wouldnt go for the top-up-tv though unless they added a Sport channel !!!
#27
i wuld get freeview just for a few extra channels as its only bout £35, but i don't get a signal coz the nearest transmitter is Crystal Palace (i live in high wycombe if anyone knows where that is)
#28
(i live in high wycombe if anyone knows where that is)
HINT: wycombe wanderers
#29
depends how much tv they watch
#30
high wycombe is about 20min from me @ home (not uni)

Gets on your wick umm when the reception wanderers? Ooohh you mean the football team

Also being High Wycombe you'd think reception would be fine right up there :)

Seriously though, that is annoying, to know the channels are available but the transmitter doesn't provide your area with a signal :|

Hmm,
I was going to try getting one from argos, see if it work/was any good, then retrun it if not, but the argos catalogue says you cannot return them unless broken! Would love to be able to just "see" if it works in my area, cus the website says it won't! :(.

Seems that anything half decent comes onto the normal channels sooner rather than later anyway.
The boxes are about £30 now so I expect after Christmas you will be able to pick one up for £20 so I know I will wait for the sales.
:)

Ooops, just got one for Christmas. :):)
#34
JUST A NOTE
with the old freeview boxes they didn't have a card slot you'll have to update all old boxes to receive payper view and sports. Top-up TV not worth it as you can get most through a decent ariel for free, check area for availabilty
http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability.

This threads from 2004!!
#36
you get the new 5 channels, 5US is pretty good for films, e4, film 4, freeview is well worth getting imho
#37
Just as I was going to post my opinion to!

I guess its not really needed 3 years later!!
#38
still toubled though, i hear they are now going to start the switch off from oct this year, and they still dont have decent coverage yet....

considering it was meant to be done 4-5 years ago.....
#39
2 reasons for getting freeview

1) improves picture quality

2) extra chanels definitely worth it (E4 and film4 for example) - richersounds were selling a £10 freeview box around christmas, and my dad got one for a similar price in asda. So for the people whinging about having to go digital within the next 5-10 years, it's not all doom & gloom!

SKy Sports News is also available on FreeView. Second by second live video commentary of all featured games for free. Worth it on its own.
