FS/FT: PPG or BT - why refuse to deal with BT?

I am new to using the FS/FT forum, and am having no luck selling my bits. I have an issue though, having recently offered to buy something paying by Bank Transfer, only to be told the sum offered wouldn't leave much left over after postage, and the seller only deals with paypal. Today I saw the item was sold for the same amount I offered, but by paypal. I realise it's entirely up to the seller who they wish to sell to and all that, but I'm a bit miffed to be honest. What's up with taking my money by bank transfer? It's just as (un)safe as PPG or am I failing to sell my stuff because I've asked for Bank Transfer as method of payment. Any advice appreciated... or I'll be freezing my bits off at a car boot sometime soon.

You have no cover as a buyer with bt and as you have no feedback people will be a bit wary.
What happens on here to build up trust is to offer to send items to long time members with good feedback and they then pay once they receive the item.

PPG offers no cover either for the BUYER, feedback has nothing do with anything.

The OP in question just might no be happy with giving there bank details out.

I know I've no feedback, which is why I make it clear that I will post and payment is not expected until the item is received. It's irritating me more that the item was sold to someone openly rather dodgy herself, only after the feedback, when I really wanted the shoes!

There's no cover as a buyer with PPG though either, is there?

as abacus says, its a matter of building up feedback,so offer to post first to established members-we all had to do this in the beginning-Ive never had an issue with paying or getting paid by bank transfer-in fact,I dont even have paypal.

Some people think giving bank details isn't safe (it is), some people don't have online banking so can't check if the money has gone through, some people want to buy something else off the forum and need the paypal balance. Lots of reasons.

Nope think people are miss reading the OP.

Very helpful that you are willing to post first, though I don't think there is anything you can do regarding people refusing BT. Just one of those things.

I've been making it clear that I'll post first - and am happy to. My issue is that an item I offered £4 by BT for, was refused and sold to someone dodgy for the same amount PPG. Why would that be? Do selleres not like BT? I do!

why dont you ask hana? im guessing she doesnt like her bank details given out?
i also think some people use paypal like a money box to use for more purchases?
if they take bt it goes into the family income..
or if like my o/h could be a business account?

you do need to remember that the seller can sell to anyone they choose, doesnt need to be first offer even-the goods belong to the creator of the thread and they can sell to anyone they want-even some sellers are wary of people with no feedback for various reasons-nothing you can do about it.

just keep trying and I am sure you will build up feedback in time and become a trusted member.

I think a lot of people are more wary as there is actual bank details involved, I know I am. I have no idea about bank transfer, what information is available and what information I have to give out. I also don't know what information is safe to give out and therefore I will never pay with or accept payment from BT. With Paypal I know usually the only thing going out is an email address, physical address possibly phone number etc, never any sought of financial details.

BT may be perfectly safe, im sure it is and im sure the details you give out must be safe to do otherwise the guys here wouldn't use it, but the fact that im dealing directly with banking details makes me much more worried and may have the same effect on others.

Came out as a bit of a jumble but you can probably get the point, if not feel free to tl;dr

I'm trying! Close to giving up though. Am listing things for next to no money, carboot money really, and am stunned it's not selling. Especially when I see some serious tat actually selling!

Only details given for bt are the same as on a cheque, account number and sort code, they can only pay money into your account not take any out
