You can only run 3 applications at a time, so no, it sucks.

I believe they removed that restriction late in the beta process - its fine for what the OP wants.

Is that true?

I think it WAS going to be the case but they took that "feature" out.

I have tried Basic and Ultimate on my netbook and neither was faster than the other, with ultimate there was no resource hogs from the OS, I thought Basic would have been faster due to installing less stuff on the system but that wasn't the case, Starter will be fine for your needs, the biggest resource hog I have is Firefox, whilst other browsers are faster I need firefox for one of its extensions.

Windows 7 everytime, I get a better battery life for one, and anything that worked with xp will work with 7, if it doesnt run just right click and select compatibility mode for any previous windows version.

According to the comparison chart on Wiki (link in previous post) there is no XP compatibility mode in the starter edition.

According to the same chart its not on basic either but it is on the version I used, however there is a workaround if not. http://keznews.com/6587_Workaround_to_Install_Windows_XP_Mode_in_Windows_7_Home_Premium_and_Home_Basic

Not sure on what that means as according to the info even on ultimate you have to install virtualisation software but I've never needed to do so,

This is on basic for software right click>properties>compatibility
