2-3 years ago my son set up a you-tube account that he forgot all about, earlier today he received an email from a large independent multimedia company enquiring about the account, which had the credentials of the company and the company name as the user name, as my son requested a small payment (not knowing how much it might be worth). this is the email, below.

I'm a producer at *** *******, I look after all things online at ******* *******. We're hoping to use YouTube to publish archive material and other clips for YouTube users. Having the ************ username would make it much easier for us to direct our viewers to the site, as we use it at facebook.com/************** and twitter.com/**************.

Would you prefer it if I called you to verify who I am? If so, what time would be best for you?
* = blocked out name of the company, God knows what they might do! haha

Could someone please help us with some much needed advice regarding the issue. Thanks a lot.

Give them your login details as well as your sort code, account number and mothers maiden name.
Job done.

If you're sure it's a company and not just someone making a name up, google to find their website (if it's not a well known company do a whois search). If it all look legit, get the contact details from the site and call them asking for the name of the person who contacted you. If they have never heard of the name, keep clear...

sell them the username for a bucketload of money.

Just cover all bases with them. They will expect to be tested. Then once confirmed, rinse them. The amount of cash they will probably make from using your username, they would be happy to give you a fairly hefty sum.

wow - hope this turns out to be genuine and you get a ton of cash!

Thanks for your help - He's now waiting for the producer to ring him back, any ideas what he should say or should he ignore the call? :)

You should reply with, how much do they want to offer you. Then whatever they say, double it, and stick to it :)

How olds your son? Why dont you take the call and just dominate the call. Be up front and say you know how much these things can go for, so unless its 4 figures im not interested.

Depends what the amount is, if it's only a couple of hundred I'd more than double it, if we're talking thousands then doubling it might be the best idea. Either way, getting paid something for it is better than the nothing he's currently got...

I've had a chat with our bosses about paying for the account, and they have told me what I thought they would.

Because of YouTube's policy on usernames that use brands and trademarks, and that username 'squatting' like this isn't permitted, they won't allow me to pay for the account.

I'm really sorry about that, I'd like to be able to reward your business thinking. Is there anything else I could do to take hold of the ********username"
Is this right or is he just trying it on ?

Dont ignore them but dont agree to anything without thinking it through. Once they make the first offer just say thankyou and you will think about it.

Thanks for all your replies - the problem is I don't really know if it's worth anything so dominating the the phone call" would be fine if I knew what I was talking about.;)
Thanks sam - have done that.
will wait for him to ring back and take it from there.

Why would it matter to the company for them to have their Twitter, Facebook and Youtube all in the same name ?

Have you confirmed to yourself that they are a reputable company making a honest inquiery?

If it was a domain name they would eventually just take it without having to pay. As for youtube accounts i can't see it being the case.

I was just about to post that if they are a big compnay and your son is not actively using the account they'll eventually just take it. It seems companies are protected from speculative folks who just by domain names and such in attempts to make a profit from it.

I personally thinking he's trying it on.

Message back and say, in that case, id rather keep it and use it for what I was planning on using it for.

Thanks for your interest.

Why don't you upload a video to youtube? Then they can't use the "inactive account" approach.
You may as well cover your bases!

they are stalling and will probably come back with an offer but if it does not get used why not give it to them, your son never had the money in the first place so you cannot miss what you never had.

Just looked seems youtube don't have a problem with people squatting. So he is either going to have to pay or provide another service for your son.

Don't need to upload anything, they can't prove it's not used just to login to see adult content videos and to rate videos by other users.

He doesn't upload adult videos he's only 15 !!!!

Will I get thrown off this forum for too many posts or is it o.k. to carry on ?
The guy has just phoned the landline and asked if he and a colleague can make an appointment to discuss this matter further - shall I say yes or no and should i let my son speak to them. He's ringing back at 5:30pm.
