Does anyone else think Gail Platt is wrong, I mean imagine someone elses mother arranging an abortion for your child, wow, can even begin to think what I would do, ok so she does not get on with her parents (or so she says - but Gail has never met them to judge them and is taking things into her own hands), I think it is really bad, ok so I know its only a story but my kids watch this, does this say that if you cant talk to your mum for any reason its ok go to someone else at 15/16 and get an abortion arranged for you.

This will be an interesting thread...i'm sure peoples opinions will differ dramatically on this sort of subject.

It's always a tricky one.
#2
Cant see how its tricky, it would not be tricky if it were your child, would you honestly want your 15/16 yr old to have an abortion without your knowledge or support!
#3
get a grip people, it's in telly land!
#4
you know shes not real?

Didn't mean this specific story line in a soap, the abortion topic in general is what i was referring to....

Did you mean to say 'Only reply if you agree with me that this is wrong'? That is what I deduce from your response to smithyp1.
Not much point in having a thread if that's the case.

I would like to think that any daughter of mine would grow up feeling safe in an enviroment where she could talk to me and/or her Mum about anything and feel safe and secure in doing so.

However, if someone grows up in an enviroment where this isn't the case, surely it is better for them if they have someone in their lives they can turn to rather than suffering the consequences of not saying/doing anything through fear.

[Don't watch Corry, so can't comment on the specific storyline, however you are right about Gail, whenever I have seen her in the past the first thought that entered my head was 'She is just wrong!' ;-)]

Gail has not pressured her at all from what I can see -she has said on more than several occasions that it is the young girls decision. Yes, of course even saying this she could be steering her towards a decision but I feel she has handled it really well.

Gail has had to take what the girl says at face value - her parents would go ballistic and throw her out so I believe she is handlng the situation as best she can.

Obviously offering up the cost of a private abortion makes Gail even more involved but ultimately she is trying to do her best in the current situation.

I like the way Corrie touches on these senstive subjects and the way the characters deal with them makes both good telly and makes for a few lively debates.

Come on people - what do you think?

I did add its just a story but I was just it was done so lightheartedly, as far as abotion is concerned I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that its your own life your own choice, it was the storyline re going to someone elses mum, mum believing difficulty at home etc, I felt it could have been a bit more specific, gone into depth a little more to show that she really was having problems and Gail believed it because she could see it, but the story line was that Gail accepted every word that came out of her mouth and even that her son was the Dad, - going out 5 weeks (or something) had another boyfriend.
Honerstly how would you feel if your 16 yr old had problems on the operating table and you were not there. I know I am going over the top a little but I guess I am lucky and I have a wonderful family whom I believe can talk to me and I can talk to and I know there are families out there that are not so fortunate but back to the storyline, she does not look as though she has come from a bad family in fact they seem quiter well off (financially, I mean) not that that is everything but oh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok I give up

Yeah I know it's a story - it’s not real but there are real inconsistencies in the storyline. It does my head in really – Only the Christmas before last David found out that Gail was thinking about having an abortion when she was pregnant with David – David went mad over Christmas lunch and was a major motivator in him driving a car into the cannel and nearly killing himself on his sister’s wedding day!

Can’t Gail see the connection? It may make ore people watch it later in the day – seeing how this bit of the story plays in augmenting the storyline down the line – but really……… it’s a little unbelievable to think she would be quite so willing to go behind David’s back on something like this considering he is settling down and considering what a major motivator the abortion theme played in him being so messed up in the first place!

Come on Gail – come on the script writers please!

Actually, you asked if Gail was wrong.
I would be most unusual IMO if a parent wasn't extremely upset if his/her child had an abortion without telling.
Whether 'Gail' was wrong is quite a different question.

I think its odd Gail is organising it, it should be Gail and the lass going to her parents and talking it thru with David and decide the future, no wonder he leaves his mum for dead!

I think that soaps portray life as so awful that you are brainwashed into beliving that your own life isn't so bad, all the newspapers do it too.

Gail is being supportive which is great BUT it is another thing paying for the abortion. Why pay, free on NHS.
If she is not grown up enough to go and see GP / nurse for independent advice, she is not ready to make decisions for herself.. Final decision is hers, not Gails but Gail is leaving herself wide open to accusations later on. Not many people would put themselves in that position, would they?
