GAME phoned me up today to let me know I can now pre-pay for my Switch

I mentioned I wanted to trade in some items and it came up in conversation that they will no longer price match on trade-ins after the end of February.

So anyone intending to trade-in for Switch (or anything else) please keep this in mind, and get trade-ins done for credit before the end of the month if you intend to get a price match.

Thanks for this mate, was going to trade in a few ps4 games on the midnight release. Looks like I'll have to do it before Wednesday :p
#2
Hopefully game at least sort their own prices out, for me they are pushing me towards digital purchases.

Never have to change discs
Game sharing making everything effectively half price
Buying credit at 70-80% keeps the costs comparative to retail
Retail will very shortly have almost no resale value if game don't offer half decent prices
#3
They stopped doing this deal in quite a few stores recently.
#5
I traded my PS4 in las weekend and they price matched+5% with CEX round the corner. Makes no odds to be honest with CEX out there, just go to whichever gives the best of you have both close by.
#6
I was told by a member of staff that today was their last day to price match. They are restructuring the trade in prices to be more comparable with CEX. It'll be interesting to see if they do give more as before it was a mega rip off.
#7
GAME seem to say whatever they think they need to to make you buy - I wouldn't be surprised if he was just pushing you to get in and prepay for your switch.

They'll probably try and tell you need to buy it as a bundle if you want it on launch day too.

This was brought up a month ago and never materialised.
Seems like some stores try and make up the rules as they go along.
Simple fact is if they don't price match or beat them take you business elsewhere.
If it's on the website then it's in their terms and conditions.

From what I can see, it's no longer on their website.

That aside, the price-match policy has *always* been subject to the store manager's discretion.

When it first came to light. It was a handful of stores testing this idea. No idea if it's progressed further or not. Game don't seem to reply on twitter about this, and my local store is about 4 miles away. So I don't use them often to ask in person if they are going to quit price matching.
#11
Just went to my local GAME store and they have said the same as the OP.

Still says on the website "we'll give you the best local trade in price"

What do you think" give you the best local trade-in price" means? oO

Well considering they don't beat prices now I don't have a clue, please inform us.

Pretty simple English really.

Not sure what part you're misunderstanding.

Will be a massive blocker for me. I only ever get stuff from Game when getting them to match Cex trade in prices. I won't be going in there to give them £50 cash for a new release.

Comments above have suggested that there is no difference and that people should go to cex instead, but cex don't have the stock of new games that Game has.

As many will know, Game make more money on trade ins than they do on their new games so they need to remember that and keep encouraging people to trade with them.

A store called up and said you could pre-pay for a preorder.
Am I the only one that thinks screw you Game. Sounds like a wee need a cash injection, let's see who we can get to boost us a bit.
I'd certainly not trust Game with any 'credit'.

apparently the reason is so you can get it quicker on the day as you have already paid.

but I assume this will only help you if everyone in front of you has also pre-paid too.

Sounds iffy to me. All it does is ensure your cash is spent in Game.

Been a while, but when the PS4 came out, my local game had one of the tills for the pre paid people to get them through quickly. Also checked the queue for people who had and direct them to said till/member of staff

They've always done it. It's usually only done within the week leading up to release however

Just went into game and found this out, to my horror. RIP Game. I wont be selling anything to them as their prices are still a rip off! I think they are probably holding way too much stock. Plus side is game credit may increase in value when selling on here. If you are holding a large amount of Game credit, its probably time to cash in before its too late.

Game were willing to pay £8.00 but when I mentioned cex offered me £13 they said they will are no longer price matching. This started couple of weeks ago

That's not a statement that they will price match. It's a statement that 'TIM the trade-in machine' will give you the best local price. ;) I've never seen this Tim character in any game store I've ever been in so without any terms or conditions it's pretty much meaningless.

If you make an advertising statement such as that and don't set any terms and conditions then the consumer can take what is written as gospel and the advertiser needs to adhere to it.
That's why T&Cs usually exist. To give the advertiser a get out clause.
It's false advertising which is why it has been reported to ASA.

Tim is an outward projection of company thinking and policy on their company website. Its their IP and nobody else could have written that. When you say "best " it means you come in first, be it price match at the very least and come joint top or "the best" by beating on price.

As you point out, the meaning of best price is obviously down to interpretation. Similarly, give you the best price could just mean they will tell you the best price. I'll wait to see what the ASA response is, cheers.

Firstly, it was the other guy who claimed to be reporting it to the ASA so I'm not sure what your involvement in this consumer rights activism is. Unless you're empowered by the thought of jumping onboard another guy's complaint, which seems to be based on the fact he'll get slightly less credit to spend on his computer games from now on :(

Secondly, if the ASA feel the need to look into a complaint about Game's website then the result will be made openly public - they don't just email the complainants the outcome of their investigation. Unless by 'won't be telling you' you are referring to the email you receive back from them to tell you to stop wasting their time.

Whatever, good luck with your petty vendetta against Game - let's hope Game shut down & you can feel you did your bit to help British consumers & happily continue doing all your shopping online.

Went and found this out today when trying to trade in Super Bomberman R
CEX
Cash £32
Trade £36
Game
Cash £25
Trade £38
I'd have taken the £32 cash from CEX rather than the £38 credit from GAME and then made my purchase in Tesco or Asda.
