Gamers please help! 360 or PS3?

Hey all.

I'm guessing there's already been a fair amount of talk about this, but I can't search for either 'xbox', '360' or 'ps3' using HUKD search engine (unless I'm missing something).

So: I might have some cash to throw after a console this Xmas and I'm not sure which one to go for. Traditionally, I've been a PS2 user (never had an xbox), but can't really say I'm much of a fanboy for any camp. I have a Wii, and love it to bits, but I'm not a Nintendo fanboy either. I have an HD TV at home now, and would really like a console with a bit of grunt behind it to play on the big TV - hence the thoughts about the next-gen consoles.

I enjoy mainly FPS games and racing games. Although the Wii seems to have re-defined what type of game I enjoy (Mario Galaxy is king right now). I probably had the most fun on a computer game ever playing Half Life (PC), Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) and Resident Evil 4 (Wii). So, its probably these types of games that appeal.

My only problem with FPS is that I find the controllers too frustrating to play them with: after playing with a keyboard and mouse (on PC) or the Wiimote, using two sticks to move around feels severely limiting. I couldn't think of anything worse than a game with stunning visuals, but spazzy controls due to the limitations of the controller in an FPS. Does anyone else feel this about console FPSs? This could be a limiting factor to me - and keep me on the Wii.

Games like Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock appeal too - but these are (or soon will be) on both platforms. GTA5 is going to be on both platforms.

I don't want or need a HD movie drive. Neither blu-ray nor HD-DVD interest me in the slightest. So, the PS3 blu-ray drive isn't a deciding factor to me.

Also, I've heard that modding the 360 is relatively easy now-a-days. I haven't heard anything about how easy (or otherwise) the PS3 is to mod, however. Is it even possible? Ease of mod would also be a major deciding factor in my purchasing decision.

So, there you have it. If you've had both consoles, or a lot of experience with one in particular, could you offer me any advice? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Nooo not another ps3 vs 360 thread..

I woudl say 360 as some games come out sooner on it then the ps3 and they are sometimes cheaper. Also some ports have been done very poorly to ps3 (eg FEAR).
However there are a few good exclusives on the ps3 coming out next year.Graphic wise theres hardly any differnce between the two.As your not after a HD player i wouldnt spend the extra to get a ps3 then.If you change your mind about the HD player you can get a addon on for the 360. I woudl suggest getting a ps3 later on next year.

As for goin from PC to console controller,i used to play alot of FPS on the PC and i couldnt get the hang of it on the original xbox and PS2,but i find it actully much easier to use the 360 controller on FPS
#4
Agree with the controller issue. I don't think a controller will ever be as good as a mouse/keyboard for FPS games, however i was surprised how quickly i adapted to it on the 360. It's still hard to get pinpoint accuracy at times but on the whole its not an issue once you get used to it.

For whats its worth i would recommend a 360. Purely because there is a better selection of must have games on it and plenty more to come.
#5
you can play with a keyboard and mouse on the ps3 for ut3.
#6
Firstly I will say I have a PS3, the reliability put me off the 360.

Also if you like playing online you will have to pay subscriptions for xBox Live, where as the Playstation Network is free.

BTW if you want to search for 360 or PS3 just use PS3* or 360* to get it working.

search like this

ps3*
xbox 360*

think that helps

I had always been a sony boy until the 360, the PS3 never interested me and of the people i know who have them no-one is happy with it down to the lack of games, if the blu ray drive isn't a deciding factor why pay the extra for a PS3, go for an Xbox 360 elite, or specifically ask for a HDMI Xbox 360 when you go to buy one to put to bed any reliability issues as these in the whole have now been put to bed. There are so many good bundles around now, i'd personally go into Gamestation as they often have the best deals, as far as games go i'd personally over time get Halo, COD4, Mass Effect, PGR4, Gears of War, Oblivion, GRAW 1&2 and Test Drive Unlimited the last few of which you can buy for next to nothing now.

actually games are starting to show up and ps3 is almost the same price as a 360 nowadays.
#11
Its got to be a 360 £250 and you get a console with a HDMI and 2 games
#12
The price of the PS3 is coming down but in essence its only the 40GB version which is cheap and also doesn't have the same perks as the 60 or 80 GB version the reason i bought an Xbox 360 was to play good games now, not a year down the line and the PS3 will not have any exclusives worth buying the console for even MGS has been bounded around as coming to the 360 and with Microsoft having the best line up of FPS as the author of the thread wants i'd go with the 360.

MGS4 was rumoured to be coming to the 360 at a later date but that rumour was false. The Xbox is better for FPS games, but the PS3 will soon have Haze (exclusive) and Unreal Tournament 3 (timed exclusive, and you will be able to mouse and keyboard rather than controller) and Killzone 2 (exclusive) and these are 3 examples of exclusive FPS games for the PS3. Personally I'm not a huge fan of FPS games, but Gears Of War is out on PC, Halo 3 will surely come out on PC at some point and Bioshock has been rumoured to come out on the PS3 soon and is out on PC so if I ever did want to play any of these FPS games they would be available to me even though I don't have a 360. The two consoles are probably equally matched for exclusive driving games, with the 360 having Forza and PGR, and the PS3 has Gran Turismo.

In terms of modding it is presently difficult to mod a PS3 as many people aren't really able to download and burn blurays and I think it is easily able to be done on the 360, but you will most probably be banned from Xbox live and your your warranty will be voided. So it would not really be a good idea to mod either console for the foreseeable future.

All you can really do is look at the exclusives coming out for each console over the next year and try to judge which console you can envisage yourself playing longer on.
#14
for me most games i want are coming out cross platform anyway, so id rather have a ps3 for them as its built well and its free online. have enjoyed cod4 on the ps3 much more than gears of war or halo 3, but thats personal preference

The Playstation Network online thing is free and the 360 one you have to pay for, but there is a reason for that! The 360 Live is ten times better. In my books the 360 will always be better for the online capabilities. Only reason i would get a PS3 is for the Blu-ray drive.

How do you quantify '10 times better' ?

10 times better but infinitely times more expensive! :giggle:

And you can't say the the 360 will have better online capabilties until Playstation Home is out!! At the moment it does, but Home will be out around March and it will be a service that rivals the 360's and will probably be better!

Lol, I know but I still believe Home will be better. The idea behind Home seems good, the only problem would be how well Sony design and implement it, if it is done successfully the PS3 will have better online and socialising facilities, if not then the Xbox will continue to be better, which is why I say a judgement can't really be made until Home is out.

I couldnt see myself paying for xbox live £40 a year. The PSN has been fine for me, it works well especially as its free. I think the noise factor alone put me of an xbox, but its a shame the PS3 hasnt got as many great games like the xbox. I think that will change in 2008.

Basically in answer to the OP question, both Xbox and PS3 will suffice. Xbox has more FPS games tho. However, I sympathise with what youre saying about using the controllers for FPS - they simply cannot compete with a keyboard and mouse, if someone is shooting you from behind it takes a good second or two to turn 180 degrees, whereas with a mouse you can turn instantly! People might say youll get used to it, but if youve used a mouse youll never be 100% happy. One thing to bear in mind - the PS3 games will support keyboard and mouse (UT3 being the first example). I dont think the same can be said for the Xbox.

I was one of the unfortunte early adopters of the PS3, but I've got to say it's starting to grow on me. Xbox's Halo exclusivity has come to an end and most next gen games are now multi-format, predomintley performing SLIGHTLY better on the PS3.

As a unit the PS3 is a far more solid console, particulalry without the jet engine fan systems that continues to plague the Xbox. The PS3 is not without it flaws but with Blu-ray, DVD upscaler, free wireless online service and Sony's network of global studios supporting the console, it's definatley got my vote.

No I don't work for Sony, but if you've got any jobs going...:)

Home is better. I can tell you that now ;-)

People will say the same old, I will say get a 360 just because I have one. But in my honest opinion, I played on an Xbox + PS3 before I chose which to buy, and was glad I bought the 360. It may not have as many features as the PS3, and you do have to pay for online. But all round its a good console, whereas I don't think the PS3 online interface is all that.

Xbox controllers are pretty good for all games types in my opinion, same with PS3 controllers, just I find their a bit small.
#24
I mean i do want a PS3 but it just seems more money for something which is relatively the same as the 360. When more exclusives start to come out for it then it will have a bigger appeal. I know that when MGS4 comes out im gonna have a hard time not opening my wallet lol
#25
i Have a xbox 360 amazing as it is, for some reason, i want a PS3! Played it at my friends COD4 and for some reason the 360 version looks better!! :?

However, i think the main attraction is the new price of the PS3 £299.99 with Fifa 08! good deal aslo it is a Blu - Ray drive so sexy times! but for games i'm gonna wait till MGS4 plus there is Final Fantasy! soooo yeah....why did i post i was no help lol sorry ! :p

just get both

Wow. Guys. I mean. Wow.

I didn't expect quite the response that this post has generated. I am truly grateful for all the time everyone has put in to posting something to help make my mind up. Sorry to all those that think this is yet another 360 vs. PS3 thread - I do realise there is little value in rehashing old threads. But the console market moves so quickly (especially at the moment) that some of the old arguments might now be out of date (e.g. price comparisons).

I've seen the latest demos of Home at the last E3, and was completely blown away. Being able to walk into the virtual cinema and watch a movie - for me - a massive selling point. I love that kind of stuff. Oh... that's reminded me: I did read somewhere that the PS3 online service will be streaming HD movies. Is this true? This is another major selling point for me - being able to rent HD movies would rock. I don't know many people who have HD consoles right now, so the 'friends' stuff doesn't really bother me too much.

The reliability and build issue is of concern for me, too. I don't want to be sending my console off for repair ever (have never had to in the past). Are the 360's hardware issues due to MS rushing the console out to market so early? Whereas Sony took their time and got it right?

You know, I'm still completely undecided. The key factors seem to be:

360
- greater selection of (good) games right now
- cheaper (console and games)
- potentially easier to mod

PS3
- has enough good games to keep me entertained (COD4, GTA5)
- better built / more reliable
- potentially better online service (when Home comes out)
- ability to rent/download HD movies?
- support for keyboard and mouse
- better controller (I always got on really well with the PS2 controller, but the original xbox controller (which I hear is the same size as the 360 controller) just seems too big and bulky).
- HDMI out

I like what the PS3 offers, but I like the range of games that are out for the 360 now.

No, I'm still completely undecided!

Thanks for your help though, guys. I really appreciate it.

Wait, so you ask gamers for help? Then only mention consoles. What a joke!

Personally, I'm not a Windows user, so I'm never going to play games on my PC. Quite apart from that, I'm not willing to keep spending money on a computer just so it can run the latest OS or game. At least when you spend the money on a console, you know you're not going to have to upgrade it to play the latest game.

But I take your point ;-)

Don't forget Craig although Home is coming HD movies/Tv Shows are coming to the UK Xbox Live Marketplace for rent/download soon as are xbox originals - original xbox games that are downloaded through the marketplace such as Fable, Halo and Fahrenheit, just needs microsoft to release it http://www.tech.co.uk/home-entertainment/gaming/consoles/news/microsoft-video-marketplace-coming-soon?articleid=1550942415
also its out before christmas most likely on December 4th when the latest update occurs, and the 360 controller is perfect much better than the original Xbox
#30
PS3
- has enough good games to keep me entertained (COD4, GTA5) - GTA5 and COD are out/coming out on the 360,GTA will have more add on missons and content exclusive to the 360)

- better built / more reliable - True

- potentially better online service (when Home comes out). - I would wait to see what microsoft bring out to rival that (if anything)

- ability to rent/download HD movies? - Like bennype 73 said ,xbox will have the abilty to download and rent HD films off xbox live

- support for keyboard and mouse - A keyboard can be used with the 360,but i dont think you can play games on it,which is abit strange for saying most PC s use Microsoft operating systrem

- better controller (I always got on really well with the PS2 controller, but the original xbox controller (which I hear is the same size as the 360 controller) just seems too big and bulky). - 360 controller are much smaller and rounded much better then the original xbox controllers

- HDMI out - The newer 360 have a HDMI out

let me put it to you straight, currently right now the xbox 360 is much better out of the 2.....you can clearly see on IGN.com that the same games that come out on both xbox 360 and ps3, the xbox 360 always gets better reviews then the ps3 version...i have both consoles...i've had the xbox since launch and i've had the ps3 about 2 months after launch....and i always play more on my xbox 360, i buy my games for the xbox 360, like Pro Evo 2008...had a choice ps3 or xbox 360...i took the xbox 360 version because better reviews and also online experiance is much better then ps3 online.....

basically if both consoles died out on me and i had to buy one of the 2 i would go for the xbox 360, i'm not a xbox 360 fanboy...i'm just saying the truth....currently right now out of the 2 xbox 360 is winning but in the future the ps3 will probably overtake and be better out of the 2 console in the future....

hope this helps:thumbsup:

PS3 Home is a waste of time, I don't want to have control my digital (Sony HOME) self to walk to the cinema building to watch a game trailer, or walk myself to the web browser to surf the net, or walk myself to the demo lounge to download a demo, or walk to the video store to download a video/film.............LONG

Simple browser - go directly where I want to go quickly, I hate this second life concept its not necessary to re-invent the wheel to browse for what you want.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. It's fun and a lot better than Second Life.

BTW you can still 'browse' videos and games in the normal menus.

********. Home will not cover up the fact that you simply CANNOT pricvate chat with mates (whilst not in the main menu), invite mates to games, access your friends list in game... ETC ETC on PSN.

Live is just so much better than PSN it's not even funny. And I have a 360 and PS3 (and a Wii).

In my opinion you will have a better time with the Xbox360 i.e more games out there better online infrastructure, well established as a console. But in comparison to the ps3 there have been some issues with the 360 in terms of faults which microsoft is working to fix. Either way 360.

i have had my console sent in for the Ring of Death...basically a UPS guy comes, picks up ur console and thats it....you wait 3 weeks and they send it you back....working perfectly fine and give you a free 1 month membership of xbox live...and also on top of that they extend your warrenty to 3 years from the date they fix it for you...so sounds all good to me

Would be a lot better if they didn't fail in the first place.
