Gas /electric price increases

I received a letter yesterday from my gas and electric supplier saying that they are unable to maintain their current price levels and from August 25th they are increasing my gas by 29.2% and my electric by 19.2%.
How can they get away with backdating a price increase that far? Have I not entered into a contract to pay the price advertised? Isn't this like getting your shopping in ADSA and then them coming to you 2 mths later and saying sorry the price of meat went up and you owe us X amount?
Fair enough if the letter stated they were putting up their prices as of Oct 30th or something but this just seems wrong.

What are your views and experiences?

ive never been notified of price rises, so although slightly late at least you have been notified - lol

I complained about this when I got my last bill because they had put the prices up without telling me, apparently they are allowed to increase prices and have 60 days to notify the customer:w00t:, they said it was because wholesale prices fluctuate and they have such large numbers of customers that its not possible to contact them all before increasing the price.
They argued that if I ordered my shopping online from Asda two months ago I had to pay the price on the day not at the time of shopping.
I still think they take way too long too inform customers, I noticed the price had gone up on the bill but have only just been informed in writing that this price increase has taken effect.
Sassie is right they have us all over a barrel.

Certainly makes it difficult to keep on top of gas/elec bills, I am trying to watch ours, and am inputting weekly meter reads, and keeping an eye on how much it will be costing me, but if they can put the prices up and not tell you then you cant fully watch your spend. It just makes it easier to run up a massive debit bill which of course they love cos it means you cant switch till you paid them.

Some unscrupulous people would telephone them and say that they just so happened to have taken a reading on August 25th and it was (give today's reading). You would therefore get the past two months' supplies at the previous rate.

But you'd have to be as unscrupulous as a ..... utilities provider to do that.

I submit my own readings regulaly online so that I can keep an eye on things.

I have found that they are usually well out when they estimate the changeover readings ( I used to keep a written record of meter readings so could tell) and its always in their favour, once you have received the bill they wont let you adjust the readings, although if they contacted you prior to the new rate you would have the option of supplying a correct reading.:whistling: Thats one of the reasons I input a meter reading online once a week, its very difficult for them to massively over estimate my usage after increased prices. They dont like it though and keep telling me that I dont need to.
