Gas emergency call out query

hi guys

got a query i need answering sharpish please.

ive got a painter working in me cellar and he said he noticed a whiff of gas coming from my main gas box which is located in the cellar. Now he said he cant be sure as he's been there all day so it could abit of damp mixed with the paint smell he's been working with all day.

but i want to know, if i call the gas board, if there is a issue with the main gas box, do they charge to fix it?

My painter said leave it for tomorrow when he comes in and he will know first thing in the morning if it gas as right now, he said he cant be sure as like I said, he's been in the cellar all day so it just could be the dampness and the paint smell which is making him think that.

but in the even if I have to, just want to know their prices so im not caught unawares.

thanks

call out is free, jesus lol

only if they have to repair something inside your property do they charge.

just light a match to check if it's gas you can smell. (joking)

Too much work.

I know this may seem silly and can't beleive im the first asking but can you smell the gas? It is distintive so surely you are able to tell if its gas. If in any doubt call them its not worth the risk.

Hi Macs!

nearly done, just the painting left now. Its been delayed for so long as I discovrd I had a woodworm problem but then a surveyor came out and said i had dry rot in the beams which needed sorting. so ive been delayed by quite a few unexpected problems which have delayed the work which i first set out which was just some decorating. so the extra jobs eat into my budget so its been a some journey...LOL

loving the replies in this thread. the main gas box is in the cellar so theres some damp there which masked the smell of the gas along with the painter being in there all there,erm,painting...but it was quite strong paint so that too covered up the smell.

and along with that, had quite abit of dry rot in the cellar which has recently been all sorted so in my defence, theres been alot of other smells which has masked the smell of the gas.

but all in all, gas guy from the emergency thingymejig came out and said indeed i have a gas leak, made it safe, I called a gas guy who is a family friend and he's sorted it all for me.

well ive booked a breakaway in morocco early next year which is just whats needed. Hopefully, got a decorator in and he seems to know what he's doing so this is the final stretch now in terms of things need doing. It started out with doing one freaking room....LOL

But in a weird way, its good we found all these problems as once every thing is painted decorated and carpeted, then i assume it would be a nightmare to sort out the problems i Had. The dry rot in the beams was major,as was the woodworm so all in all, yeah, im peed off its carried on for this long but rather now than later when everything would have been furnished.

That one room has a lot to answer for - I remember saying at the time it would not stop at the one :D Little did I know it would be the whole house though.

Like you say, best it was all found now rather than later. Good to hear you have booked your hols, you will certainly need one! :)
