Fern Britton....worked a treat

Only choice.......why ?
#2
It can be very dangerous can't it?
#3
We had new neighbours move in 3 years ago and the woman was about 25 stone or something but she'd just had a band fitted - 18 or so months later she was and still is a size 10 and looks fab. Says it's hard, being sick loads and going to have it tightened up all the time but she says it was worth every penny

I have a friend who had it done about 8 months ago, and is doing fantastic. It has made a huge difference to her life, and she is looking great.
#5
determination and hard work and sort out a healthy diet and exercise helps?
#6
im sure its not the only choice you have!!

Not all the time it doesn't. I tried this and couldn't loose anything. I have now been diagnosed with hashimoto disease, which has killed off my thyroid, meaning I have no metablism and therefore can't loose weight with out thyroxine.
#8
yes i agree if you have a medical condition then that is different but sometimes it comes down to diet.
#9
Water and a vitamin pill each day for a month will see you lose a lot of weight.
#10
I agree Iglimpse my cousin is about to have it done, and what she said really made sense.....
I said its very risky, and she replied with " it is my last chance, i either go for the op and take the risks, or live another day and take the risks".....she is doing it for her kids.
I wish you and her all the luck in the world, and understand being fat isn't all about eating lots x
#11
Someone at work had it done as a last resort, she got in the lift the othr day and my mouth dropped, she is looking great!! She was at risk of never seeing her kids grow up, but now her life has changed.
I am very wary of operations but you must have been thinking of it a lot to ask on here....good luck if you decide and even more if you decide not.

that'why don't skinny people get fat' program last week was really interesting. They had one really fat guy who lived on nothing but water and vitamins for 1year 2months!, basically being fat was good in the past as when lean times came fatties would see themselves through it and live off the fat in their bodies. I am one of those who can't put on weight, i am almost perfect weight but would love another stone but just can't do it.Also mentioned about this virus that a lot of fat people have got , starts as a cold and has a infection period of 2 months where it can be passed on. once you get it , it triggers the fat cells in your body to double in size!, anyone who suddenly got fat ...now you know why, you could the fat cold.
Anyway more to the point the gastric band seems like the best way if your metabolism is messed up, but it is apparently a dangerous operation. There is also another one where i think they cut the size of your bowel .
Good luck whatever you decide

I have an underactive thyroid too (Hashimoto's disease) too am on thyroxine replacement tablets for life, it's quite common. If your thyroid has been destroyed you should be give thyroxine, this will restiore your metabolism and yes, it may be a little slow but you will still be able to lose weight if you stick to a sensible calorie controlled diet,. Don;t let the low thryoid get you get and make rash decisions, another symptom of no thyroxine is depression, maybe once you get established on your hormone replacement regimine your mood will life a little and you'll be able to thing more positively about yourself and weight loss.

I've been on thyroxine tablets for about 25 years now, honestly, once they get the dosage right your metabolism is fully restored x

just remember its in for life so you will be eating very small portions forever good luck
#15
surely a consultation with the surgeon will answer anything you need to know?

With time, you can stretch the stomach again.

defeats the point of the band though if you force food in after you get the full feeling then no point getting a band in the 1st place

I was just mearly stating that weight isn't always down to eating the wrong things. lol, I have only been on the thyroxine for 2 weeks, starting on a really low dosage, kind of scary to think I am going to be on meds for the rest of my life, but hey ho, it's not all that bad, lol.

But anyone thinking of getting a gastric band fitted, seriously go to the doctors and ask for a thyroid function test, to see if there is any underlyeing problems. Alot of Doctors don't acctualy know about hashimoto disease, as so many in my GP practice have shown, and a hell of alot of people could be going undiagnosed.

Going ahead with it.

IMO the risks of the procedure far outweigh the benefits I will reap.

I have lost a lot of weight twice with healthy eating and exercise. Never ever been on a daft diet. However, the weight creeps back up, I just cannot mantain it.

The weight goes back up obviously because the old habits creep back in and you eat more.

The band is no easy option, healthy diet and exercise still required, just makes it more difficult (not impossible) to put the weight back on.

Not about vanity, just don't want to face the disease consequences of being overweight which I am only too aware of.

There is no medical reason why I am overweight, I just enjoy food and wine too much and I am not disciplined enough to know when to stop.

IMO this type of surgery is going to become much more common on the NHS soon, contoversial as that may be.

I am paying myself and very lucky that I have that choice.

who? everyone
....mine consists of 900 calories a day...low fat.....30 mins of exercise a day...not perfect but its working for me...just dont think I will be able to keep it up...:-(

nope I meant the OP. Low fat isn't always a good idea. Good fats help get rid of fat, and is good for 101 other reasons too.
#26
wow 900 calories!
#27
I always find dieting more as a life style choice i.e

if your eating 900cals, you will only do it for x amount of weeks, then you will go back to normal. Put the weight back on.

Just eat about 1500ish but exercise a bit, yes it will take longer to get your results, but your more likely yo stick to it and not feel hungry all the time. When you get to were you want to be. just go back to 2000 or something and take it from there.

A jump for 900 to 2000 for example wont end well. Im not saying after your diet u will be guzzing food like a yeti but just trying to make a point :p
#28
900 calories seems v stringent.

Do you have the support of your gp?

I remember when I was a teen used to go through bouts of starving myself and I was only like 7 stone so my question comes just from concern xx

tbh..I find it hard to lose weight....1500 calories doesnt seem to shift the weight...GP thinks my weight is healthy right now.....so....another stone and I will try and keep my weight where it is.....that will be the real hard part....:)

You've done so well though so you obviously have control over it all. Amazing achievement xx

no i havnt had them checked by doctors. but i know my blood sugars are low. under 2mmols/l before meals and 4mmols/l atfer meals. from using the home tests which diabetics use. (im not a diabetic though)
#39
normal range for blood sugar is between 4 and 7 (ish) if yours are 2 before eating thats kinda low? I'd go get a check up if I were you just to make sure theres no other reason for you to gain weight if you are exercising and eating a healthy diet.
