Getting a Credit Card

How easy and quickly could I realistically get a Credit Card?

I have no intentions of using it as such but I am off to portugal in a couple of weeks and have paid for a hire car, and after reading the small print it says they need to use a credit card as a deposit.

Could do with some help on this!

Thanks

10 to 15 days. If this is going to be your first credit card, your best bet is to probably get it from your bank.

I only have 2 weeks till I go. What a load of rubbish that is, it wasn't mentioned on booking. I am really angry with this.

Thanks for the reply.

It largely depends on your earnings and outgoings - if you've never had any credit then you may find it difficult to obtain a credit card (believe it or not!) from a third party.

Like the post above says - try your bank first...

It's so if you wreck it or take off with it they have a swipe of your card to bill you against...

Have any of your fellow travellers got one?

my missus may have one but it says the card has to be in the name of the driver....me!

Can't you just get a pre-paid credit card and just put on what you need for the car hire deposit?

Whether you get one is upto your finance situation. If you got an Amazon account they are doing a card. It gives you £15 cashback (off Amazon orders) when you get it. We ordered online and it came very quickly. I think it may have been within 2 weeks. You may also be able to contact the card company by phone and speed it up.

You should be able to be put on as second card holder. You then get a card with your name on it. This may be quickest option. If you do over the phone they may rush it to you.

You should apply today then :w00t:

About 3 -4 years ago they use to approve them online straight away, but recently I noticed that they don't give you an answer until 2 o 3 days later and then it takes about 1-2 weeks to get the card.

You miight be able to make it so try today.

capital one near enough will give anyone one, there interest is high but if you plan on paying it back in time this ownt be a problem, you do it online and they give you a near enough immediate answer

Some car rental companies take cash as deposit, usually only for small and medium cars. Group A and B. Just contact the rental company and ask to be sure!

well as soon as I got home from work I gave my bank a call and I was given a Credit card. I have no intentions of using it except for putting down as a deposit for the hire car.

I have to go to my bank today and sign all the forms as that is quicker than waiting for them to send it out to me then she said it should take 8 days so even that is touch and go.

I just went to the bank to get the forms signed and there is nobody there to sign with for at least 2 days.

Im really cheesed off with thomas cook .

Which Bank is that?

That isn't very good.

No point in blaming Thomas Cook, it isn't their fault.

while it isnt thomas cooks fault, they didnt make it clear that a credit card was needed when picking up the car.
so now because they haven't told me i am now rushing around trying to get a card in my name.
Credit isnt a problem its the time scale.

in the terms and conditions it states that they have to have a credit card under the drivers name and will not accept a debit card. I am going to give hertz a call now.

Thomas Cook are only agents for the Car Hire Company ( Avis or Alamo ), it is the car hire company that should have made it clear to you.

Good thinking, let us know how you get on.

well I phoned hertz who stated that it was nothing to do with them as I didnt book with them directly. I phoned expedia and told them I was disgusted and they offered to waver the cancellation fee of £25 and transfer the name to my girlfriends if she had a credit card- but she doesnt.

In the meantime after turning up at the bank yesterday and not getting anywhere I called hsbc and told them what happened so they told me to turn up at my local branch as it is a main branch and they will sort me out.
On the way home on the off chance I turned up at another branch , they couldnt help me so I headed to my local branch. Walked in there only to be told that I had to make an appointment and that there was nothing they could do. I left work an hour and half early to get there and now I have to go back today.
