That's good.:-D

IMO the most important factor is do not be tempted to overfeed them as it is the uneaten food that causes most of he problems. I feed them about every 2-3 days.

My daughter's (I look after them) are 2 an half years old now which the fish shop said is very good going.

I wouldn't particularly bother with the strips, just change about 20% of the water every 1-2 weeks.

I don't bother cleaning the gravel, give the tnk a good clean every 2-3 months and put new gravel in, can change the colour for variety then. Would be too much hassle to clean the gravel and it's not that expensive.

To be honest I wouldn't expect a 21 month old to hold interest in goldfish for very long tho

I had 4 golfish, 2 from petsmart (now pets at home) died within 6 months, 2 from different fetes both lasted over 5 years

You can get live plants to go in to the tank, these are good because it gives the fish somewhere to hide and they can nibble them if they get hungry. We got a water purifier thing, but it actually seemed to make things worse and they liked it better without.

When you are cleaning the tank just put the fish in a mixing bowl type thing. Empty the tank into a colander and rinse the stones this way. Wipe around tank and replace everything

I would suggest getting normal stones, not coloured ones. We had coloured ones and the colour came off them a bit and made the water a different colour when you were rinsing them - cant have been good for the fish!

I got my son a goldfish and put it on a shelf in his room, told him to be carefull, if he spilt the water the goldfish would dye. Lter that day he came downstairs crying that his fish was dead! I found it on his bed, when I told him off he said "but mummy I didnt spil any water:w00t:

Not that hard to clean the gravel, we just put it in a kitchen colinder (obviously kept only for the fish tank!) and kept rinsing and moving the stones about. Didnt take long and I wouldnt like to see what came out after 2-3 months! It was dirty enough after 2 weeks!

Pets at home do a replacement guarantee if the tank is set up properly before you buy the fish and then it dies withing 7 days (or they always used to)
Also - I bought fancy goldfish thinking they were the easiest to keep but managed to kill them off on a regular basis but had much more success when I had danios and tetras and similar so id recommend NOT getting goldfish but would definitely recommend Pets at home. They will question you how long tank has been set up and running for tho so make sure you give it several days before attempting to buy. If you are near Salisbury I have a tank and pump and ornaments you could have if they are of any use
and a net and i think food (pound shop stuff is fine)

you need to cycle the water before you put in any fish

this is to get the rid of the ammonia that will be in the tank

consider doing a fishless cycle, full instructions here: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=113861

I have had numerous fish from pets at home and they have all had some disease or other. Get the fish from a local independant fish shop.

Better to get 2 & they are much happier with a filter in the tank.
