Sisters Sky box has stopped recording and loses signal all the time so she is in need of a new one. Anyone had any good deals on a new box? Is it best to ring and threaten to leave?

Sky isnt like Virgin where as you own the box rather than rent, therefore they wont send you a replacement for nothing.

Ask for one on the for sale someone may have an old one they can sell you or look on ebay

if you phone and say your leaving as your box is broken, they will offer you another one, can't remember how much they ask, tell them you can't afford it and wait for them to lower their price

Was thinking about this and would probably do it myself but because it is for my sis I would be worried it would turn up faulty or break after a week. Which knowing my luck it would!

Cheers have advised her to try this first and hopefully she will get a decent offer. Otherwise she will most likely end up going for the £10 a month hd + free box offer.

How do you know it's not the dish / lnb ?

We pay £10 a month to sky for their engineers to come out for free if anything goes wrong. We've had this 1 month and we've already had a new (double the memory) sky+HD box, a new remote and the engineer said that the dish could be moved higher to get a better signal (all covered for free). You do need to weigh up the pros and cons though.

I had problem with loss of recording, have done housekeeping a few times to fix this, but then yesterday I had loss of signal problem.

Called sky, they did all the tests, got most of the channels back and my planner back. Said it looks like box needs replacing.

Engineer is coming out on monday, cost of £65. If the dish, wires or box need replacing then this will be done at no extra cost. Dont think thats too bad, was expecting £65 callout and then charge for a new box since I am out of warranty

I wanted a new box about a month ago as we didn't have sky+, and they offered me a new box free and HD channels free for six months (then £10 a month for 6 months, after which I can cancel if I like).
If I didn't want the HD subscription they said I could just buy the box for £49.

Sounds more like the LNB and dish at fault. Any trees around as these may have grown? Even a high gust of wind may of put the dish slightly out of place.
In terms of getting a new box this may work;
Ring up and see what they offer first but remember that you are speaking to CS and not the rentenions team who can offer alot more than they can ;)

I had same problem yesterday (after having recording problems over last few weeks too)

The main box is fine, is the multiroom box that is having problems, so cant be the dish. Still, they reset the box in the hope it would fix it but it didnt.

Im not sure about it being a dish fault - no idea about these types of things. as she lives in a flat in the middle of a city there isn't anything obstructing the dish.

Thanks for the replies

As mentioned above, I have had the exact same problems.

Sky engineer just been out and swapped the box, said it was obviously the box. All working fine now.

Paid £65 for the engineer to come out, that included the box.

Oh and I asked if I got a new remote and he said if I wanted one I could have one and went and got one from the van, so now we have got a spare :)
