Hi All..
just wondered if anyone can help me as i'm not a techie at all when it comes to stuff like this.. i was one of the idiots that when i got my new laptop early this year decided to use the free Norton AV trial that came with my HP laptop.. i'm not renewing and have decided to install AVG AV as it's free and comes highly recommended. My problem is iv been told that you have to uninstall ALL of Norton AV first as it will probably not help when i put the AVG programme in.

My problem is.. how do i make sure that all files of Norton are uninstalled and how do i find out what version i installed into my laptop??? many thanks

use the installer on there website

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

also check your control panel list of installed applications and remove any left over

I had the same thing last month. I uninstalled it, ran the removal tool then ran CCleaner registry fix until it was cleared. Could then install AVG

EDIT : Beaten to it again ;-)

I also did a file search for & & deleted any stray files that remain. It's an awful product, slow, clunky & it gets everywhere & the firewall is useless in terms of user options.

when you start norton it should tell you, how old is laptop ? if its in last few months it will be the 360 version... any older will be either 2007 or 2006

it should have nortons360 on it then, i would double check though, just run thew application and it will tell you

ccregistry fix is a tool that removes anything you want that nortons or other progframs have installed inside the backing of the operating system, it just makes sure your pc is 100% clean

i would recommend avast instead of avg ........ avast has less bugs and more reliable & also free

you could try doing the removal tool for the 360 version and it should give an error if you have wrong version

If I remember correctly it's the same removal tool for all versions, it just gives you info about your specific product then links to download. Used same one on OHs old PC & new one

EDIT : Yes, Just checked & I think this was the specific one I used - Step 3, bottom of page >

You'll be fine. I got the same error when I tried to download AVG after I'd done standard uninstall but then it worked fine. Why do they seem to put Norton on every PC ? I've got a Medion, a Sony Vaio & an Acer & they all came with Norton Security 1mth trail thingy & our BT Broadband have it as their free security package. No wonder they are such a wealthy company ;-)

nortons have contracts with the big computer makers to be put on there pc's automatically, like windows

nortons pay them a fee to install the software trial

they make their money by people just automatically renewing the system, to save hassle

barneydog

Using barneydogs's link to download it, then open it. The main Cleaner tab will clear out all your temp directories etc, but run it when IE, FIrefox, Outlook, Mail etc are closed for maximum clearance.

Use the registry tab (1) to get rid of last bits of Norton. Click (2) scan for issues. It will find a list of issues then click (3) Fix selected issues. I don't save a backup but it gives the option to create one if you want. Then run (2) scan for issues again & keep repeating the process until no results are returned. It cleans in layers & can take 2/3 sweeps

(& yes, I have the oldest, crappiest PC in our house. lol)
