GGRRRRR.....HDMI, DVI, PVR, WTF***

Frustrating few hours............

Just treated myself to a Humax recorder. Looked forward to setting it up, on my bedroom TV, which is a few months old. (Nice 40" Samsung HD, cannot find the guide book)

TV does not have scart, so connected TV to PVR using the HDMI. PVR does not power up, just shows standby, or the time. Does not fire up and go to automatically look for stations. TV just says WEAK OR NO SIGNAL (the arial is in the PVR).

Re-read the instruction manual, says can plug the HDMI into a DVI converter but my TV has a hole for the HDMI which is labelled DVI but still the same.

Almost seems like the TV and PVR are not connected.

Fed up, Cannot speak to Humax till MONDAY. Been on a few sites but all just too techy for me and don't seem to address my issue.

Not even had my glass of wine yet, so can't blame that!!

Grateful for any suggestions guys.

Off to open the wine, might just help.

have you got the tv on the correct input? ie the one the pvr is connected to.
#2
HDMI cable is into the HDMI / DVI socket on the TV

The Humax should power up and look like its doing something when not connected to anything (apart from power), you should also hear the hard drive + fan doing something.
If it doesn't seem to turn on it could be faulty?

HDMI Cable should go into the HDMI. Have you got a convertor on it to turn HDMI into DVI?
#6
I had it in the HDMI so changed it to the HDMI / DVI slot. Made no difference. Is the DVI just about picture quality, because currently still got nothing, let alone quality

Have not got a convertor. Surely this would not stop the PVR from firing up

Can hear the Humax power up then goes quiet

You tried it in a normal HDMI socket, also tried it in HDMI have heard of TV's demanding certain things in certain slots before and vise versa.
#10
Do you have to sellect the output in the menu of the pvr i.e scart or hdmi?. Have you tried anothet hdmi lead.

What is the pvr doing, does it turn on? if not have you tried turning it on, on the pvr itself in case the remote is duff. Dont laugh but have you put batteries in the remote.

Also try googling the model numer and "factory reset". There maybe a sequence of buttons to press to get it to reset itself.
#11
Thanks guys

But done all the above. Nothing
#12
the fact you are getting a weak/no signal message indicates you are on the wrong channel usually, use your tv remote to change to the correct input(hdmi) with the pvr connected to that.

OK will look on the TV for this, not sure have heard of HDMI area...............where is the TV guide when you need it. (filed away with other important stuff...(_;) Will have to lift TV off, get model number, seek manual online do a bit of reading.

Cannot believe I am actually talking about HDMI / DVI/ PVR terms on here, proud of myself, feel like a bit of a techy X)

Is that one of those euphemisms

OK Guys

Rang John Lewis, they have a whole big techy dept....They wanted me to retune the Samsung TV but they could not find the info on how to do it.

Would have been a waste of time anyway because I went to source, found all the HDMI connections and the Humax showed up on none of them. Unplugged the Humax, put it onto another TV and just the same.

Appears to fire up (the hard drive noise) but then either goes blank or the time just comes up on screen and that's it. Can't be bothered to go look for any channels :( Useless.

So there we are, I have learned a lot (not that I wanted to!). Many thanks to you all

Humax going back pronto.

ok, have you tried plugging it in by scart and checking if there is and hdmi option in the humax menu. Just in case it needs manually selecting.

No. Back in it's box. The humax is dead, not working. The TV I bought it for does not have a scart socket, only HDMI
