Gift Ideas for an 8 Year old

My son is 8 in a couple of weeks and I am looking for any ideas for his birthday.
He is getting a DS for a combined birthday and 'well done for good school work'!
But I am now stumped as he seems to be the in between age - any ideas greatfully recieved! He is pokemon mad but there seems to be limited 'fun things' for pokemon.

Thanks one and all!

A microscope sounds good - where did you get yours from?

I am really finding this year difficult - we have just gotten rid of all the stuff that is too young and I noticed apart from lego and other building sorts there is not much fun in his room!! He hasn't asked for anything which is a first - and I wanted some ideas of stuff for the rellies to get him - a microscope sounds good - thanks

A pair of walkie talkies? kids love them and he can mess around with his mates too.

Honestly, if I was you I'd save myself money on other things, if hes getting a DS then he wont look at anything else.

There are tons of Pokemon stuff you can buy for the DS, even little cases/bags to keep them in.

Also if your a bit worried there are tons of games for learning for the DS too.

Or even buy him a giftcard for Game or Gamestation and let him choose his own games.

I think a DS is more than enough for b'day,I usually spend way less on mine on b'days, this yr be an exception as I bought a DSi when released just incase I can't get hold of later on in Summer for eldest b'day.

I totally agree - we have a limit of £50 on presents normally - but we made a deal that if his school work was greatly improved and his end of term reports reflected this he would get a DS for his birthday - he did us proud in his school work but now it will cost us!! (On hindsight it should have been for behaviour - but you can't have it all!!)

Thank you all! It is a trip to Diggerland at Cullompton for a birthday treat - and I am going to put the other suggestions to the family so they can take their pick - one spoilt child! He had better be smiling!
