Another tragedy in the UK travel industry.

Hundreds stranded across Europe.

Flights cancelled from UK.

Over 800 to lose jobs

Ryanair and Easyjet operating rescue flights.

Why does government not protect flight-only travellers?

surely this would be covered by travel insurance?

Depends on policy apparently.

Flight-only not covered by ATOL - only package holidays are covered - hence comment about government. :x

Credit card bookers should be OK but debit card users not covered.

Didn't realise that - I have rarely booked a package holiday so that would make my insurance a bit of a waste. Government should legislate over insurance cover - too many exclusions in travel, household, medical etc

what a horrible time of year for it to happen, feels sorry for all involved saw on the news that even teh staff have been told nothing, staff website and phone numbers just gone, bad show for the employers

This is very widely known so cant understand why anyone would book on a debit card. If you have the money in your account, pay by credit card and then pay in full straight away - insured and easy

why the hell should the taxpayer have to bail out people who didnt bother with sufficient travel insurance? This company was widely known to be on the edge.

if they are ATOL protected you will get your money back from them
( was affected 3 years ago when a different travel company went bust 2 weeks before 10of us were flying out!)

We regret to inform you that the tour operator Globespan Group PLC has ceased trading. Globespan Group PLC includes Globespan (tour operator) and Flyglobespan (airline).

The company you have booked with, either Globespan (tour operator) or Flyglobespan (the airline), will determine whether your booking is protected by the ATOL scheme.

The ATOL scheme is designed to protect bookings made with an ATOL tour operator. Customers booked with the tour operator Globespan are protected.

Tickets bought directly from an airline are not covered by the CAA's ATOL scheme and therefore customers with a flight only booking with Flyglobespan are not ATOL protected.

To establish whether you are protected by ATOL or can be assisted by another organisation please make a selection from the options below:

Booked with the airline Flyglobespan for a flight only booking.

Booked with Globespan (ATOL 701) for a flight and accommodation package holiday. If you booked with either company via a Travel Agent contact them immediately for advice.

If you booked a holiday with another tour operator or travel agent not affected by this failure that used Flyglobespan, you are not covered by the CAA's arrangement for Globespan's holiday customers. Our advice is to contact your tour operator or agent for advice.

Probably because many places hike on 2.5% + for using the credit card which on an expensive holiday, starts to add up.

You still should be covered, i always pay by debit card, dont believe in credit cards and as long as the flights you book are ATOL protected you will get your money back regardless if debit or credit card used.

Most flights booked direct are not covered by ATOL. Only ones booked through a travel agent. This is why thousands of people will be left out of pocket by this collapse.

but you should use a CC for flight only bookings imho

most debit cards get charged a fee too now

and get a cashback CC too as it all adds up

and if you are buying something really expensive and they accept AMEX then apply for a new account as you get 5% cashback for the first 3 months.
