"Gold" flakes in our tap water - any ideas?

Hello,

We seem to have gold looking flakes in our tap water floating around. Noticed our britta filter was turning a funny colour on the filter end so checked the water to see the floating bits.

Southern water wont send anyone to check the water unless neighbouts have same problem which they dont.

Any ideas? I rent and dont want to call the landlady stupidly...

Whatthef? Looks like oil or something.

May want to call the water service again (or a plumber) and specify it's not just little gold flakes but bit traces of gold coloured substance. Any odour?

are all the taps the same?

looks like bits of brass swarf

have you tried running the tap for a while to clear it?

is this definitely from the high pressure cold fresh water line or is it from a water tank?

Just looks like a bad case of limescale to me.....do u live in a hard water area do you know?
#13
It seems to be from the outside and inside taps. I am in a hard water area but so are the neighbours. Have contacted her and she said she will contact the water board as she wasnt happy with them telling me the neighbours need to have the same problem.

Been like this for at least 3 or four days. Have run the tap quite a while (5 mins) to see if it clears but nada. Will see what happens with landlady...

Are the bits coming from the hot or cold tap, or both?, do you have storage tanks/hot water cylinder? If you have tanks it's likely that the bits are coming from there. If no tanks I would be more inclined to think it is some sort of debris coming from the mains. I am very surprised the local water company have not been out to inspect as they like all water companies will be under strict regulations as to maintaining water quality, so it would be worth getting back in touch with them and putting some emphasis on your concerns about the water quality, but only if the taps are directly fed from the mains, not storage tanks.

Cold fresh water line... seems clear now typically - though I ran it for ages yesterday and it was still in the water.... I bet now its cleared now that Ive reported it to the landlady and she will not be happy

Perhaps if you had a mild tummy problem someone may deal with it quicker for you.
