Dear Friends,

I could really do with some help.

I would like to download some new songs of this website, http://www.gomusic.ru

Does anybody know if it is legal?

If, yes or no, does anybody have any "official links?

I "Google" the phrase "legal gomusic.ru" and not many search terms appear, however one form the Daily Telegraph did, and it was about Moneysaving and listed this as an option as it is a legal service.

Any thoughts?

Regards, and thanks for your help!

If its .ru then its a russian site. Usually they have paid the russian fees/licenses making them legal in Russia but its contested that they are not legally allowed to sell music outside of Russia.
Its a very grey area but its probably more legal than using torrents etc.
Try mp3fiesta if you're going to sponsor the Russian mafia anyway.

I was kinda thinking similar, however, I would like some kind of proof either way! Just to satisfy my curiosity!

AllofMP3.ru was a similar site...

It may or may not be legal, but none of the money you pay goes to the artist, so you imo is immoral. It's really no different from a torrent site, except you are funding the Russian mafia.

So my question now, is, do we have any "official" documents to confirm or deny?

If you have your reservations over the legality then do not do it.

Common sense should prevail. The site is .ru so why not just avoid it?

The key with regard to UK law is intent. Did you pay money into a GoMusic account and buy tracks in good faith? As you can prove that you paid for them, you have not done anything wrong in the UK or anywhere and could not be prosecuted.
If you did not pay anything, like with bit-torrent, etc, you do not have this defence.
GoMusic charges ruble rates (converted into US$) as western rates would not be affordable to Russian people. They do pay royalties, but at what rate and for what volume of usage is unknown.
As for their involvement with the mafia, Napster. MegaVideo and Limewire offered similar services but were eventually taken to court. Were they involved with the mafia? Suggesting that just because they are Russian they are mafia involved is racist, and naive.
If they are not supposed to sell outside of Russia, that is their issue, not yours. And if you heed those that say you morally should not deal with this firm, then take a look at many of the banks (high st & investment) in the UK, e.g. Barclays, HSBC, Rothschild, etc who directly fund and trade in illegal weapons shipments throughout the world, funding real terror campaigns, like the Syrian govt, etc. Following that responsible principle, you should not bank with these banks. Nor should you deal with any company in the UK that banks with them, as they are fuelling the trade. But unfortunately you'll find about 70% of all high street companies in the UK trade with these banks. So do you stop dealing with all companies who do not advertise a moral imperative? I don’t have the stats on other countries, so if you’re from another country other than the U, perhaps all the companies there are morally responsible, though I doubt it!
And think about this: iTunes has been in legal disputes for billions in tax avoidance globally, for fraudulent book keeping and are currently being sued by several smaller music publishers who claim that iTunes have not been passing on royalties or accurately recording download counts. Fact: as of 2012, Apple Inc is now the wealthiest company in the world but has one of the smallest charitable or community involvement or sponsorship footprints. Are they any more morally reliable, or do they simply have a better legal team to bend the law to their will?
Sadly, where can you turn for legitimate business practice? Best Regards!
