My 87 yo father has been ill for some time. Happily we seem to have sorted out the problems, but illness has left him very underweight. I really need some ideas of good simple build-up meals for him, or any links with good info. Thanks

Ensure ('one sip' drink) is it? Those are meant to be good, theres some other ones they normally provide in hospital for example (for people on chemo/losing weight through illness or other medical reasons).. Im pretty sure theyre available on prescription too.
Does the GP recommend he do this, whats he or she said about it?

All the supplement websites have good things for weightgainers, just be careful what you buy from them thought.

is a website i used for the gym, they also do weight gainers, I'd check with the doctor on what he advises, even up his meal intake from 3 to 6 meals a day, the 3 extra just being snack type things such as crackers and cheese, oatcakes and cheese, cheese and cheese :P wee snacky foods are always good to gain weight.

Glad he is past the illness stage OP, I'd check with the doctor what he would advise but best of luck with it all :)

Did you go with him? Might be worth you or another family member going along for another appointment, esp if he's weak and/or susceptible to virus' etc, some back-up is always helpful? You should also ask how he should go about it properly, even if the GP just prints off some diet plans for you, then theres the opportunity to ask re build up drinks on prescription. If you think you need some time then ask the receptionist if possible for a double appointment.
My gp has fobbed me off on numerous occasions (they seem to these days, because of the internet etc) and told me to 'Google it' myself (!) but tbh you can so often read conflicting advice and end up confused and/or not knowing what to do for the best.
Either way, good luck and I hope hes better soon x

thanks so much Nikki. yes, I did go to the gp with him, but as we discussed so many other things, I didn't manage to ask him about nutrition. He has another appointment in 2 weeks time, and I will deffo have it at the top of my list. In the meantime I think I will get a suppliment for him to take ... I have no experience of buildup foods etc as I am constantly looking for ways to keep my weight down!!!

It might be an idea to weigh him and keep a food diary, that way you can go prepared for the next appointment. Plus that way you'll know if what youve been doing is working, or if you've got grounds for something more on prescription or if you need more advice/help.
I think the ensure drinks aren't cheap per bottle? I don't know enough about them to comment on how well they work tbh. I know my Grandad had them on occasion, as did my Auntie (cancer patients at the time). I've only ever used Complan (Im the opposite to you, I need to gain!), but as Im lactose intolerant I can't take Complan or Build Up.. Some of the Ensure however are dairy free, theres also Soya supplements in Holland and Barratt etc (I digress!). Theres some protein bars, ice-cream smoothies, cheese etc, the obvious stuff. I don't know what he's been suffering with though, or if he's not been eating.. Sometimes it can take your body a while to adjust to bigger food intake, so little and often might be better?
Ive found some people in Holland and Barratt helpful, as are a few pharmacists, theres also independent health food shops that are pretty clued up, its just trial and error really. :)

there was a mixture that was available in india which my granma used to drink that was a ready mixture but u could try it urself.

roast/ dry fry on pan some nuts and grains ( i use almonds, cashews, peanuts, split chickpeas, rice grains, whole wheat grains, maize grains, something called 'ragi'- its a brown coloured grain which looks like mustard seeds.)
then grind this into powder- as fins as possible.

this mixture can be stored for a month or so.

whenever required, just heat some milk and add this mixture- approx 1 tbsp to glass of milk. Cook well and you will see the mixture thickens a little. then drink it like milk or soup.

this can also be given to babies or children as it is very nutritious.

(if all this seems difficult try in one of the indian shops nearby if they have a ready mixture- i think it's called 'Manna health mix)

Agree with what Nikki999 said, try smaller meals more often, always a good way to start a build up from the bottom. Food diary is also a great idea btw. Also itd be a good idea to have interesting recipes, and try new things. Snacks such as pitta bread and houmous with meatballs and a tizziki dip is also good for a small snack. Oatcakes are good aswell as they go with everything. But as said previously interesting recipes are good.
