Hi ive downloaded handbrake, it gives me the option for my output to be mp4 or mkv.

With convertx on windows, I usually have output in dvd vob format.

Is there anyway for this output on a mac?

not sure but both mp4 and mkv are valid video formats. generally mp4 is better than avi

another option is mactheripper

Handbrake works the opposite to what you want to do. It converts DVDs to avi's IIRC.
To burn an avi file to a DVD that can be played in any DVD player try iDVD (part of iLife if you have it already).

Also, have a look at Burn (free). I've not tried creating DVDs with it, but it's webpage does say the following, making me think that it'll do what you need it to:

Share your movies.

Made your own movies and want to share them with family and friends? No problem. Burn can create a wide range of video discs. From VideoCD to DVD-Video discs. And DivX discs to fit more of your videos on a disc.

To personalize your DVD-Video disc, burn can create interactive menus. Choose a theme in Burn or create your own.
