You'll have very few problems if you get a new/decent one but I would recommend the Aprilia RS125, had one myself and I loved it soooo much. I was in a bad mood for 3 days when it got stolen :(

Problem with these are, like yours they have a habit of getting stolen. The seem to need to get repaired a lot, they are a hell of a lot of fun though.

Mine got stolen the only day I didn't bother with the wheel lock, big mistake! But tbh I never had many problems with it and carrying out maintenance was easy as well...and I know nothing about this sort of thing, I just used the manual!

If the op wanted a race rep that did 30mpg it would be a good recommendation but like you say they are unreliable, get rebuilt poorly by owners who think they know what their doing but don't, total waste of time round town, cost a fortune in spares if you do know what your doing and get nicked before i can list all the reason not to buy one :|

But the op started off by saying they wanted something good on petrol so it was waste of time even mentioning the aprilia :D

If you ride around like you're in a race then yeah it won't be any good but mine didn't seem too bad when it came to petrol, used to ride to central london 5 times a week and I was getting around 40+ mpg. The honda you recommended is a really good bike, used it when I did my CBT and had no complaints but only thing I don't like about it is it looks like a toy. Which could be what the OP wants. I've heard the Yamaha r125 is a better version of the Aprilia, maybe that's a choice?
If not just get a Vespa Lx125, most probably won't get targeted for theft and looks good IMO :)

Can't race around london without bumping into police, I still had so much fun even just commuting and sometimes going into "race" mode, which shows just how good a bike it is when you want it to be fun and the petrol can be good when you need it to be.
OP whichever you choose you will enjoy it, have you had a look at any bikes you like in particular?

Another Honda CG125 vote here. Cheap to buy, cheap to run/insure etc.
