I think in NY you will spend very little time in the hotel. We went out in the morning, came back before dinner.. spent an hour getting ready and then went out again. Literally just sleeping in the room. We stayed in a comfort inn on West 35th street which was fine (couldnt tell you how much it cost though)

We stayed in the Royalton, 44w on 44th- location was ideal but Hotel was pricey, especially considering we hardly spent any time there at all :)
But you can't get much closer to Times Square, we were only a block away from the action :)

Try thepodhotel.com
Stayed there last April, tiny rooms though, but very cheap and modern and very tidy.
Ideal location too, just next to a subway station - 230 E 51st St

Got cheap tickets yesterday so started the big hotel search this morning.

Looking on many forums, if you are on a budget then The Pod Hotel and the Cosmopolitan Hotel seem to be getting great reviews.

Has anyone stayed in these?

Milburn Hotel www.milburnhotel.com 242 W 76th Street. 5 min walk then 15 mins on subway to time square. just far enough away to see where the real new yorkers live/eat/drink. not the cheapest hotel but we could not fault it or the staff. good value for money

Try the 'Broadway Plaza Hotel' - www.broadwayplazahotel.com

The hotel is on Broadway - within very close distance to the 28th street subway station

We stayed there in October 2007 and was a pleasant, clean, reasonably priced hotel (for New York) - The staff were also very friendly - would reccomend to anyone :)

Have stayed in the cosmopolitan several times, It is in a great location. It is not around times square but you do not want to spend all your time there anyway, the city has so much to offer that it makes that a pricey place to stay. The Cosmopolitan is in tribeca which is a cool area of NY, the actor arty area with fab places to eat and great subway links. You can get anyway in New york easily enough because it has a fantastic system, so i would always opt for out of times square and spend the dollars saved shopping. :p

We booked for New Years at £160 on Tuesday thanks to the deal and will be staying there again.

As long as your not too far north you can pretty much be anywhere in manhatten imho. I love it down in Greenwich village rather than up near time square.

We did this tour : http://www.foodsofny.com/greenwichvillage.php

You basically walk around greenwich and they tell you about the history of it and why its not on the grid system. Then you go round and try food at all the little places. Had a huge slice of NY pizza which was brilliant.

okay- this is a little awkward but does work- if you are staying over a weekend-2 nights.
1. Firstly get a www.priorityclub.com account-register free. (im a Platinum Ambassador-git I know!!)
2. Have a look at availabilty for intercontinental hotels www.intercontinental.com
3. If there is availability.. book 2 nights fri/sat or sat/sun on the flexible rate.
4. Upgrade your priorityclub.com account to 'ambassador' here for $150:
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/pc/1/en/c/2/content/dec/pc/0/en/ambassador.html
3-4 weeks later your stuff arrives including a free night coupon- BOGOF, so you only pay for the 1st night, so a pricey first night, but 2nd for $150=£80.
Hope this helps!!

Room Mate Grace, formerly known as Hotel QT, is highly recommended. Certain dates from $200/room are available in September, late November pre-paid from the hotel website - absolute bargain as the rooms are perfectly designed and the free breakfast + free wifi is great. The swimming pool / bar area is a bonus.
