Googles answer to Whatsapp and iMessage should be rolling out today. Starting in India and then the rest of the globe throughout the day.

Introducing Google Allo, a smart messaging app that helps you say more and do more. Express yourself better with stickers, doodles and HUGE emojis & text. Allo brings you the Google Assistant, preview edition.

Smart Reply

Respond to messages without typing a single word. Smart Reply learns over time and suggests responses to text and photos, in your style.

Ink

Get creative with the photos you send by doodling on them or adding text.

Stickers

Say it all with the perfect sticker. Stickers in Google Allo are designed by independent artists and studios from around the world.

SHOUT or whisper

No more typing in ALL CAPS to get your point across. Say it louder or quieter by changing the size of your text with a quick swipe.

Meet your personal Google Assistant

Google Allo brings you the Google Assistant, preview edition. Find restaurants nearby, share videos and get answers, all from within your conversation with your friends. Add @google to your group conversation or chat one-on-one with your Assistant. It’s your own personal Google, always ready to help.

Incognito mode

Send messages with end-to-end encryption, use private notifications to help keep your chats more discreet and control how long your messages stick around with expiring chats.

Registration is live now so you can be updated as soon as the app drops.

Smart move to release into a highly populated country with English and high mobile penetration as a starting point - one launch, either it picks up or it doesn't...

I heard they are getting into selling food there next, with Google Alloo.

Shame they didn't combine it with Google Duo, video calling & messaging in one app

Agreed, one app to rule them all would have been better.

Presumably it will be called Allo Allo when it launches in France?

I know, instead of individual apps, have one that is all combined.

These Google apps will be able to take on Whatsapp, only if Allo and Duo on Android devices integrate better with the Google Android accounts. Although Google+ also does this but it still cannot compete with Facebook!

These things are about accessibility. People made the transition from text to WhatsApp because it's simple to use, got richer functionality, is near-instant, and is usually cheaper than SMS. Unless Google or others come up with something that gives you more, there's no real reason to move. Facebook realised that hence the purchase of WA.

Because people are idiots :P

I think the only feature of use is the Google Assistant within the app.

Still not available on my sim free S6

not available in UK yet.
they need to combine allo and duo and have these heavily integrated into Android/Google eco system. otherwise there is no chance. Duo is far too simple missing basic of features such as the ability to check what time you had received a missed video call.
Continuity is needed from Android to laptops either via Chrome browser or apps. Duo doesn't even work on tablets. Not a great start in "penetrating" the market.

nah, there was a popular 80s sitcom called " 'Allo 'Allo! ", i think whoever receiving royalties from that show would argue that the name is far too similar and move to block it or take a cut of the proceeds... not to mention the confusion as millions attempt to watch some comedy genius on their mobiles
you really should research further before making suggestions about names

It should be "Allo Allo" here because that's English humour, not French at all. Just like MacDonalds, it is not even remotely anything Scottish.

What a stupid name for an app
