Rumours are sweeping Westminster that Sir Alan Sugar could be set for a job in Gordon Brown's administration. But it is unknown whether he shouted his famous catchphrase, "You're fired", at the beleaguered PM.
Sir Alan, a member of the Business Council for Britain, slipped in to Downing Street earlier on Thursday.
Mr Brown is trying to piece together a new Cabinet and strengthen his grip on power after four ministers signalled their departures ahead of the elections.
He is also facing a backbench revolt as Labour MPs circulated among themselves an email urging him to quit.
Sir Alan last night fired three of his would-be business apprentices, whittling down the contest to two hopefuls for Sunday's final - Kate Walsh and Yasmina Siadatan - after James McQuillan, Lorraine Tighe and Debra Barr all got the boot.
