can anyone reccommend me the best gpu for about £50? my son has a decent spec'd pc but it has an on board gpu and he wants to do a bit of pc gaming, namely fallout 3. Won't be playing crysis or anything so it doesn't need to be THAT good.

Thanks in advance.

9600 GSO or GT if you can spend a little bit more

Also be sure to check your spec of the rest of the computer against the minimum/recommended spec of Fallouts requirements.

cheers mate. I'm pretty good with computer hardware, with the exception being gpu's. His computer is spot on, intel core 2 duo. 4gb ram etc.

Found this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001PA6WEM/ref=asc_df_B001PA6WEM700237?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=***************&linkCode=asn&creative=7974&creativeASIN=B001PA6WEM

But as the others said above, buying used saves pounds and is for sure the best way to get your monies worth. Just make sure you get one from someone who offers a DOA warranty, so in the off-chance it don't work you can send it back for a refund. Chances are the card will still be under-warranty so the seller won't lose any money.

cheers for the advice guys, i had considered going the used route. In two minds though cuz even if its not DOA, it might last a few months and then die. So is that sapphire better than the 1gb from play?

It is the next model up, so I would hope so heh. VRAM (memory) over about 512mb isn't really useful for these types of cards, just fluff the manufacturers put on to make it appear a better buy.

Many cards are built to last, I have Matrox cards here from about 2000 which still work even though they have been lying at the bottom of a card board box for well over 8 years lol - There is always that risk, but I personally have never come across a GPU that has died during its life (ie. after the first few months of use) unless of course I was tampering with it lol

Yes the 4670 is a fair bit faster than the 4650. Don't worry about the memory at this level as you will run out of GPU processing power before you run out of memory requirement.

The passive one above is a good choice (I used to own one). Fast enough for most games yet nice and quiet when doing day to day tasks. Also holds it's value very well should you come to sell it.

thanks for the help lads, i've left all of you rep. I think i'll go for that one on amazon. He doesn't have the greatest psu and one of the reviews says it only needs a 400w psu. Thanks again
