Yeah I should have gone with Newsbin I know, but I've already purchased this now. Anyways when its batch downloading I see the meter say something like '253kb/s' and then it goes down to 0kb/s and stays like that for a couple of minutes. These dips are occuring like once a minute. Anyone got any suggestions? Cheers - Zak.

It is a BETA (TEST) prog !!
From official siteTHIS IS NOT A STABLE and NO OFFICIAL RELEASE! It has NOT been tested yet by any of the regular beta testers. So please use it at your own risk. All your old cache files, header downloads and batch files are NOT compatible with this build.
Report this to them : http://www.shemes.com/
or there is a help forum there too

sounds like your ISP to me. Can you trial something else & see if you get the same probelm?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm on a 2Mb Virgin Broadband. I'm thinking of scraping GrabIt altogether, even though I have paid for unlimited searches. What newsreader would you lot recommend? I'm looking for something which gives more information about the file I'm downloading, so I don't make my judgement on the header.

I use grabbit the same version as your trying, and I use http://nzbmatrix.com which I paid for (only $7.50 for lifetime membership) it's an indexing site so I know I'm pretty much always getting decent files as they are all tested and marked up as rubbish by other users if no good.

I then use www.newsguy.com as my provider at around £5 a month.

The trouble is if this is your ISP blocking your traffic you'll get the same probelm whoever you go with so I'd test a few trial versions to see if any others work.

Maybe try difernet ports or something you can use SSL with but I've not had to try this so don't know if it will make any diference.

worto.

edit - I'm about to change from newsguy for a cheaper one with SSL as standard, just to let you know, I'm not saying they are the best at the mo I just havn't had any trouble with them & havn't got round to swapping yet.

Thanks for the input. Yeah I realise virgin cap my connection during peak hours, but even if it is capped to 1Mb as long as it's consistent I wouldnt mind too much. Yeah SSL is a must for me (and perhaps to everyone now) due to the three strike rule. What service you thinking of signing up with? I'm using tmy trial with hitnews and I purchased 90GB credit for $20 from astraweb.

i used grabit for a while.. Then I switched to Alt.Binz and never looked back.

The trouble I get is I'm with plusnet & they use traffic shaping - overnight it's OK & unlimited but during the peak hours I only get about 40k thats goes up and down as well like your seeing. I'm not sure if virgin use the same technology or if they just cap max speed? If I want to downlaod a microsoft patch or something equally as dull I can get it really quickly but anything 'interesting' as it were is a no go in peak.

I can't remember who it was I was thinking of swapping to now news provider wise - I started a thread on here a couple of weeks ago so either the one I suggested on that once I find it again or a couple of other decent ones came out in the discussions on that thread too.

Shame we can't all find a comprimise somewhere - like you I'd be happy for a 1mb or 2mb as long as it was consistent too instead of 8mb for some traffic at some times of the day but rubbish other times - but I think thats a debate for another day (or another thread I've seen a pretty long one in misc somewheer recently)

Does usenet use SSL ? If not then who is the best to go with that does ?

I think the up down thing is down to the number of connections you have set OP. With one connection - there is a lag between finishing the last piece and requesting/getting the next. With multiple connections this gets absorbed by another connection picking up the slack.

5) Right click on the "Default Server" in the left pane and select the "Server properties" option
6) Drag the "Maximum Allowed Connections" to 8 and click OK

I uninstalled GrabIt and downloaded Alt.Binz upon your recommendation. Looks good, only thing I can't work out is how to search the servers that I've manually added.
